Richard Webster Roddy, Jr., 57, of Waxhaw, NC, passed away on November 5, 2025. He was born in 1968 in Havelock, NC at Cherry Point while his father was serving in the US Marine Corps. He grew up outside of Littleton, NC on Lake Gaston where he lived until he was 16. He graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham in 1986 and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1991. Richard worked at Microsoft Corporation for 34 years, most recently as a Senior Support Escalation Engineer. He was dedicated, faithful, and proud of his work and the consistency he brought to everything he did.

He had the best laugh. He was incredibly intelligent and loved to fix things and solve problems. He was always everyone’s go-to when they needed help with tech, weather, gas prices, or anything else. He always seemed to have an answer. He was faithful to serve his family and his mom, taking care of her after his dad’s passing. Richard had a servant’s heart. He loved serving at his church, Carmel Baptist, every week in various capacities as a lead usher, deacon, and high school boys small group leader. He helped with the “Marriage on Target” archery class, chaperoned at student camp and “The Pause” retreat, and joyfully volunteered to push babies around in their strollers during services.

Some favorite memories of the family include his reading Wild & Wacky Totally True Bible Stories to the kids every night before bed, teaching them to ski before they could even walk, and planning family beach and ski vacations. One of the funnier memories comes from a trip to Turks and Caicos, where he was navigating his way driving on the “wrong” side of the road, using his windshield wipers to indicate each turn.

His family was his greatest accomplishment. He was a devoted and loving husband to his bride of 33 years, Christy. He delighted in helping his children grow: teaching them to crawl and walk, ride bikes, drive, manage their finances, navigate college applications, apply for business benefits, and most importantly, to love and follow Jesus in all circumstances. He enjoyed taking walks with his dogs, Finley and Bucky, and also took pride in his consistency and dedication to his work.

He loved all things NC State Wolfpack. No matter the sport, he was watching and cheering them on and sharing his love for them with anyone around. His wardrobe consisted, not mostly, but only of State gear. He even had an Alexa device programmed to light the room red whenever the Pack would score or win a game.

He also loved snow-skiing and had many plans to go “out west” after retirement. He loved racing to roller coasters at Carowinds, finding the shortest lines at Disney World, reading a good book, coaching Josh’s youth sports teams, and attending Maddie and Hannah’s dance, theatre, and band performances. He was always looking for ways to make his family smile, whether by sending Christy, Josh, Maddie, and Hannah funny dog videos or challenging them to the daily Wordle. His family will look forward to continuing Jersey Mikes’ game night every Tuesday.

Richard is survived by his wife, Christin Thomas Roddy; his children, Joshua Blake Roddy, Madeline Roddy Smith (Conner Smith), and Hannah Grace Roddy; his mother, Ardith Roddy; and his sister, Erika Woodard (Stephen Woodard). He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Susan Nelson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John Thomas Sr. and Lisa Thomas; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Jackie Watson (Thomas Watson), Karen Mathieson (James Mathieson Sr.), Jason Thomas, Lauren Thomas, John Thomas Jr. (Kyle Thomas), and Taylor Thomas (Kelsey McCraight); nieces and nephews, Caleb Watson (Autumn Watson), James Mathieson Jr., Karis Baker, Will Mathieson, Ian Woodard, Zeke Watson, Davis Thomas, Archer Thomas, and Isabelle Thomas; and great-nephews, Mateo Baker and Colter Watson. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Roddy Sr., and grandparents, Wilma and James Hollis and Alice Jean and Donald Roddy.

He will also be remembered by countless family members, friends, and colleagues who loved him deeply.

A celebration of life will be held at Carmel Baptist Church in Matthews, NC, on Tuesday, November 11 at 4:00 p.m., with a visitation following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Richard Roddy to Carmel Baptist Church (1145 Pineville-Matthews Rd., Matthews, NC. 28105) or NC State University.
