SPENCER: Richard D. Rollins,77, of Spencer, died suddenly, Thursday, Jan. 22 in UMASS Memorial Medical Center, Worcester after falling at his home. He leaves his wife, Marie E. (Brosnahan) Rollins, his son; Jason and his wife Kristen, his grandchildren; Aaron, Breanna and Robert and his brother James Rollins. He is predeceased by his son Brian, his brothers; Harold and Robert and sisters; Irene and Carol. Rich was a plant superintendent at General Wire in Worcester before retiring in 2014, after working almost 50 years in the Wire & Cable industry. Rich moved to Spencer as a child and quickly became active in the sports scene. He especially loved baseball and played on the High School team as a catcher. As a teenager, he helped his brother with his Little League team and developed a keen sense of how to mold and instruct youngsters. Later he was to have his own Little League and Senior Little League teams. He umpired baseball and refereed for the Merchants League basketball teams. In retirement, Rich golfed in the Monday & Wednesday men's golf leagues. At home, he loved his flower and vegetable gardens. For years, providing the Spencer Senior Center with fresh vegetables. Rich was an avid reader and a staunch supporter of the Spencer Library. He took pride in his community and was a lifelong Democrat. His grandchildren were the love of his life and he was able to see them grow into strong and capable adults. He leaves behind a hole in the hearts of his family and friends. Rich was born in Worcester, the son of Harold and Marie (Pruneau) Rollins and later graduated from David Prouty High School in 1966 and WPI School of Industrial Management. At his request, funeral services are private at this time. Please omit flowers. Memorial donations may be sent to the Spencer Little League, P.O. Box 101, Spencer, MA or the Spencer Senior Center, 68 Maple St., Spencer, MA 01562.
