Richard L. Schneider, age 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, October 2, 2025, at Bayhealth Hospital in Dover. He was born February 7, 1942, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Richard A. and Elsie (Kish) Schneider.
A graduate of McKinley High School in Canton, he went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Capitol University, and later a Master of Science degree in Technology of Management from American University.
In 1965 Richard joined the United States Air Force. He served a total of 23 years in active and reserve forces. Though planning to become an accountant, the military redirected his career to the computer field. His military career took him to several stateside bases and overseas to Taiwan. At Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio, he met and married wife Penny in 1973. A proud Viet Nam veteran, he strongly believed in defending the freedoms our flag represented. Transitioning from military to civil service he continued working in the computer technology field. He held positions in the Federal Highway Administration, Department of Agriculture, and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, retiring in 1997.
Throughout, Richard's life reflected his love of God, family and friends, and country. Among the qualities he is remembered for are kindness, generosity, integrity, faithfulness, and joy of life. Over the years he enjoyed numerous activities including boating, beach walks, travel, sports and reading. He especially treasured family events and celebrations.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Richard is survived by wife Penny; children Mary Beth (Jathan) Miller, Jan Marie (Bill) Trent, John (Marissa) Schneider; 5 grandchildren, Terry (Miranda) Tucker, Jessica (Garrett)Windsor, Heather (Brandi) Coffey, Dakota (Ashley) Roush, Haley (Cody) Roush; and by 7 great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the ICU staff at Bayhealth for their exceptional care and compassion during Richard's last days. Their attentive and empathetic support was a comfort to him as well as to us.
A future memorial service will be held at Barratts Chapel in Frederica. Burial will also be scheduled at a later date at the Veterans Cemetery in Millsboro, Delaware. Any donations may go to Felton Viola United Methodist Church or to The Wounded Warrior Project.
