Richard "Dick" James Schultz, of Stevens Point, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2024, at the Stevens Point Care Center while valiantly battling cancer, at the age of 76.
Dick was born March 29, 1948, to the late Martin A. and Mary (Durkin) Schultz, of Park Ridge, Stevens Point, WI. He grew up in the area, where he attended local schools and graduated from Pacelli High School in 1967.
Following high school, Dick bravely enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Seaman Third Class Bosun's Mate on the aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt. He also toured in the Mediterranean, Spain, and Italy, where he got to see the Pope. The night before enlisting, Dick met Vicki Kubisiak while patroning Fill's Bar. During his enlistment, he and Vicki exchanged love letters and on April 11, 1970, they became husband and wife at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Dick was a loving husband to Vicki and the two celebrated 54 years of marriage.
In 1974, upon being discharged from the U.S. Navy, Dick took over his father's accounting and tax service, Modern Business Methods. Dick was able to add new clients along with retaining some of his father's clients; all of which lead to many lasting friendships. While Dick ran the business until his passing, Vicki was also at his side, working as a team to meet the accounting needs of their clients. During his life, Dick also spent some time working as an accountant for Sentry Insurance, Figi's, Ho-Chunk Casino in Nekoosa, and Copps.
Dick was sure to see as much as he could in his life and enjoyed traveling with Vicki. Together they visited Myrtle Beach, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, New York City, Philadelphia and Tampa, to name a few. He also enjoyed bus trips to the horse races and various casinos. However, his favorite trip was the annual 2 week vacation to Mesa, AZ, with Vicki and her family. While there, they stayed on a golf course where they could enjoy daily rounds of golf and catching the Brewers and Cubs spring training. In fact, Dick was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He liked to golf at Wisconsin River Country Club, Stevens Point Country Club, and Sentry World. He was an active participant of the Friday Night Couples League and also enjoyed mixed couples golfing socials. Additionally, he could often be found taking part in Friday and Saturday night couples bowling leagues. If Dick wasn't playing the sport, he was certainly cheering for those who did, including the Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers, and Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks. He was also sure to cheer on the more local athletes, attending high school and UWSP sporting events, with Vicki at his side.
Above all else, Dick simply enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was sure to make lasting memories with everyone and was a dear friend who was sure to make you laugh, with funny stories to share, sometimes adding a little extra spice. He truly was a devoted husband, son, brother, and best friend to his brother-in-law, Mark Kubisiak. Some of his most cherished memories include time spent at Shawano Lake, Pembine, Found Lake, Mud Lake, Dubay, Chain of Lakes in Eagle River, Lake Monona, and Door County. He also love the fireworks on the river, chili feeds, round robin Christmas parties, family reunions, Halloween parties, Fifties parties, playing cards, game nights, and golf outings. Of course, we cannot forget the numerous visits in the driveway with neighbors and even with the neighborhood kids who took Dick in as a Foster Grandparent. Ella, Alex, Leo, Anissa, Jesse, Sydney, Cortny, Kalin, Jenna, Alex, Stephanie, and Gretchen - if it were up to them, Dick would have had a jungle gym, trampoline, and inground pool right in the front yard!
Dick was also sure to be involved in the community with more than just spectating sporting events. He was a proud member of the Elks Club and he and Vicki were actively involved with the UWSP women's basketball program. Dick and Vicki were also members of the Coaches Council Fast Break Club for 14 years. Dick worked hard to secure donations, work on pre and post game socials, planning the end of the year picnic, and senior day. Through this work and attending monthly meetings, Dick developed lasting friendships with coaches and assistant coaches, current and past players and their families, and committee members.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the entire staff at the Stevens Point Care Center. Their outstanding care and compassion was above and beyond and they will never forget them. The staff were like family, watching over Dick when his family could not be there. Furthermore, the family wishes to thank Compassus Hospice, Aspirus Hospital ICU, and Heartland Hospice for the care on his long journey.
For those wishing to express their sympathies, the family kindly suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Dick's honor, to be put towards a memorial at a future date.
Dick is lovingly survived by his wife, Vicki; his brothers, Charles (Kay) and Daniel (Patty) Schultz; his brother-in-law, Ryan Bose; his sister-in-law, Kay Schultz; and his brother-in-law and best friend, Mark Kubisiak. He is further survived by his Godchildren, Gretchen Hintz and Matt Schultz; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members and dear friends.
Dick was preceded in death by his infant son, Brian Keith, whom passed shortly after birth in 1972; his brother, Thomas Schultz; and his sister, Mary Ellen Schultz Bose.
Dick was a devoted husband, son, brother, and best friend. His untimely passing leaves a huge void in the lives of everyone he left behind.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Shuda Funeral Chapel - 3200 Stanley Street.
