Richard Vernon Simmons, 72, passed away at his home on November 19, 2025. Born on August 27, 1953, Richard lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to the people he cherished. He was the sort of man who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need, and he never hesitated to step in when someone needed a helping hand or a gentle word.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Stephanie Simmons, who was his steadfast partner in all of life's adventures. He leaves behind his daughter, Amy Payne and her children, Kylee Payne and Ryan Payne; his son, Adam Shoemaker and Adam's wife, Ashley Shoemaker, along with their children, Collyns Shoemaker, Pyper Shoemaker, Fletcher Shoemaker, and Maren Shoemaker. He is also survived by his goddaughter, Jordan Liskey and her husband, Caleb Liskey, and their children, Cullen Liskey and Meredith Liskey.
Richard is further survived by his beloved dog, Apollo, his loyal companion who brought him constant comfort, joy, and friendship. Their bond was unmistakable, and Apollo remained faithfully by his side.
Richard's large and close-knit family also includes his sisters, Shirley Neff, Hilda Mohler, Debbie Shifflett, Diane Alt, and Doris Stenberg, and his brothers, Roger Simmons, Virgil "Gene" Simmons, Ricky Simmons, Kenny Varner, and David Simmons. He is remembered fondly by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who adored his humor, his quiet wisdom, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mabel Simmons, as well as his brother, Stanley Simmons, with whom he shared many childhood memories and a lifelong bond.
Richard spent his days working hard, loving deeply, and cherishing simple joys-whether that meant sitting in the garage with the dog or sharing a cup of coffee with his wife. His faith, loyalty, and gentle spirit were the cornerstones of his life.
Those who knew Richard will remember him for his contagious laugh, his remarkable patience, and the way he could make even ordinary moments feel special. He touched countless lives with his generosity, always showing up when it mattered most. His legacy will live on through the family he loved so deeply and the many lives he quietly brightened along the way.
May he rest in peace, eternally loved and forever remembered.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
