Richard M. Sloan

Richard Michael Sloan, age 90, a long-time resident of Rochester, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 5, 2025. Beloved husband of Marilyn for 58 years; loving father of Michael (Jill), Matthew (Tracey), Patrick (Tanya late), Timothy (Katherine), and Jonathan (Deanna); and proud grandfather of John (Jack), Timothy, Kevin, Michael, Isobel, Liam, and Benjamin. He was preceded in death by his siblings Peter, Irene, Sheila, and Annette, and is survived by his siblings Maureen, Bernadette, and Paul.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Richard (Dick) was the cherished son of Richard and Veronica. He attended Mackenzie High School and the University of Detroit, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in counseling. He devoted the majority of his professional life to Sterling Heights High School, where he guided countless students with compassion, patience, and wisdom.
Dick was a man enriched by curiosity-an eager reader, a lover of history, and someone who found deep meaning in understanding the stories of the world and the people within it. His love of music carried him through every season of life, nowhere more evident than in the four decades he spent singing joyfully in the choir at St. Andrew's Catholic Church.
Above all, Dick cherished time with his family. He delighted in the everyday rhythms of fatherhood and the profound joys of being a grandfather. Summers at the family cottage on Lake Huron in Canada were among his most treasured moments, where the laughter of children, sunsets, campfire storytelling, and the company of loved ones formed memories that will live on in those who shared them.
Anchored by his Catholic faith, Dick defined his life through devotion-to his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his siblings, and the values he held close. Gentle, warm, thoughtful, and steady, he leaves behind a legacy of kindness and quiet strength.
He will be dearly missed, and lovingly remembered, by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family will receive friends at Potere-Modetz Funeral Home, Rochester, on Thursday, December 11 from 3pm to 8pm. A mass will be on the following day at 11am at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Rochester.
