Richard Nutter Smith of Vienna, Virginia, passed peacefully at home on May 16,
2025. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Shoemaker Smith for 65 years, and
loving father of Gretchen Burke (Paul), Cynthia Loftin (James), Jennifer Smith
(Parris), and Hilary Lambrecht (Bruce). Survivors include ten grandchildren,
Timothy (Maggie), Kelly, Jack, Steven, Daniel, Haley (Timothy), Anna, Stephanie,
Samuel, Isaac and great-granddaughter Penny. Also surviving is sister Marcia Mink
(Roy) of Franktown, VA and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Smith was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 15, 1933, the son
of Lloyd Lalus and Ruth Nutter Smith. He graduated from Towson High School in
Baltimore, MD in 1951, and played a year of Freshman Varsity basketball at the
University of Maryland before serving in the army for two years during the Korean
Conflict. He then received degrees in Wildlife Management from the University of
Maine (B.S.), and the University of Massachusetts (M.S.) and later an M.S. in
Public Administration from American University in Washington, DC.
Mr. Smith worked for two years with the Maryland Department of
Conservation (Natural Resourses) before joining the United States Fish and
Wildlife Service in 1962, directing activities in animal damage control and
research. He retired in 1995, having held the position of Deputy Director of the US
F&WS since 1989 and as a member of the Senior Executive Service for fifteen
years.
To his friends he was known as Dick Smith, an avid small game and fowl
hunter and fisherman, to his daughters, the dad who coached their softball
teams, and supported them in all their endeavors, and to his wife, the most loving
and loyal companion that anyone could dream and wish for.
At his request there will be no service. A scattering of ashes will be private,
followed by a celebration of his life at a gathering of the family. Those that wish
may make contributions to The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Avenue,
Annapolis, MD 21403.

Pop-Pop always wanted to know what was going on in your life, what was the next step. He was proud of all his grandkids, even if he did yell "You´re outta the will!" if you beat him in a round of Oh Hell. He liked to send me newspaper clippings of interesting articles that would always make me smile. I will miss him everyday. Love you Pop-Pop.

I am so sorry for everyone´s loss. Uncle Dick as he was known to me was a great man. He had the most peculiar sense of humor lol I always had so much fun with him and I am so grateful I was able to see him this past July. He was truly one of a kind. You will be greatly missed. Until we meet again Uncle Dick. Love to all of the rest of the family. Keeping every one lifted in my prayers. Pray for peace as you grieve.
