Richard James Smith II passed away on September 29, 2025, in Wayne, Michigan, at the age of 68. Born on January 13, 1957, in Clare, Michigan, Richard was a treasured son, brother, uncle, and companion whose memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
Richard's academic journey led him to Central Michigan University, where he earned a Master's degree that became the foundation of his lifelong commitment to learning and teaching. He began his career as a science teacher in North Dakota, igniting young minds with the wonders of the natural world. His passion for education guided him back to Michigan, where he served as a Catholic school principal in Ruth and later as a high school administrator at Climax Scotts Schools in Battle Creek.
Outside the classroom, Richard was known for his love of sports. A huge Detroit Lions fan, he could often be found cheering on his favorite team, embodying the true spirit of loyalty and camaraderie. His dedication to the team extended beyond mere fandom; he served as a security guard at the games, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees. His gentle presence and friendly demeanor made him a beloved figure at every event he attended.
Throughout his life, Richard's interests reflected the depth and diversity of his character. An avid nature lover, he found solace in the company of birds that flocked to the feeders in his yard and took great pride in his lush garden, filled with annuals, perennials, fruits, and vegetables. His rescue cat, Sundae, was a cherished companion, spoiled with love and attention. Richard's generosity extended beyond his home as he sponsored four children through Compassion International, forming meaningful connections through letters and gifts that transcended borders.
A member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Westland, Richard's faith was a guiding light in his life. His involvement with the Wayne Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the board, demonstrated his commitment to community and civic engagement. Friends and family often marveled at his uncanny ability to answer Jeopardy questions with precision, a testament to his sharp intellect and broad knowledge.
In 2013, Richard faced a formidable challenge when diagnosed with A-Plastic anemia. Given a prognosis of five years, he defied expectations by participating in drug trials through the National Institute of Health. His remission, which lasted until 2023, was a beacon of hope for many. Even as the disease returned, Richard's altruistic nature shone through as he continued to contribute to NIH studies, hoping to pave the way for future treatments.
He is survived by his loving sister, Kathy Cook; his devoted life companion, Mary Herig; and his cherished nephew, Jeremy (Lana) Cook. Richard's life was enriched by their love and support, and he, in turn, enriched theirs with his unwavering kindness and gentle spirit. He is preceded in death by his father, Norman Adair Smith, and his mother, Doris Marie Smith. His family takes comfort in knowing that Richard is now reunited with them in eternal peace.
Richard James Smith II lived a life marked by love, service, and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of others. His journey may have concluded, but the impact of his deeds and the warmth of his spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of those he touched.
