Shelby Richard Wesley Smith Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the age of 77. Born on November 13, 1948, in Madison, Tennessee, Richard lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication.
Richard's journey began in the heart of Tennessee, where he was born to Richard Wesley Smith Sr. and Verna Eileen Dahlke, who have preceded him in death along with his cherished siblings, Robert "Bob" Smith and Lauren Smith. From a young age, Richard was known for his spirited humor and zest for life, traits that remained with him throughout his years.
Proudly serving his country as a Vietnam Veteran in the United States Army, Richard carried the values of honor and service into every aspect of his life. After his time in the military, he embarked on a career as a Shift Manager in the textile industry. Throughout his career, Richard was respected for his leadership and dedication, earning the admiration of colleagues and friends alike.
Richard's personal life was filled with passions that brought joy not only to himself but also to those around him. He was a loving husband to Katherine "Kathy" Smith, with whom he shared many wonderful years. Together, they raised two beautiful daughters, Sara Allen (Erik) and Emily Gordon (Wesley), who, along with their families, were the pride and joy of Richard's life. His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren—Sadie, Charlotte, Hazel, Frances, Grace, Jackie, George, and one eagerly awaited.
A true believer in the power of laughter, Richard was always up for a good joke and found delight in classic humor, particularly the antics of The Three Stooges and the quirky charm of Mystery Science Theater. An Atlanta Falcons football fan through and through, he celebrated victories and faced defeats with unwavering spirit.
Richard valued the simple pleasures in life: the tranquility of canoeing down the Nantahala River, serene moments spent by Lake James, and the cherished times with family and friends. A staunch supporter of his community, Richard volunteered with the GOP, offering his time and energy to causes close to his heart.
The family will hold a gathering in his memory on March 5th, 2026, at 12:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 PM. A private interment will take place thereafter.
Richard Wesley Smith Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family and country. His spirit will forever inspire those who knew him, reminding us all to find joy in the everyday and cherish the moments that truly matter.
