Kalona- Richard Leo Surly was born January 31, 1954 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Geraldine (Olson) Surly. Richard graduated from West High School in Waterloo and DMACC in Ankeny with a degree in culinary arts. He was the Dietary Manager at Pleasantview Home in Kalona. Richard was united in marriage to Cynthia Spicher on June 14, 1980 at the Holy Trinity Church in Richmond. Richard was also proud to serve his country by joining the US Army then US Army Reserve retiring after 20 years of service. He enjoyed antiqueing, walking, feeding the birds and spending time with family. Richard passed away Monday, September 8, 2025 at his home in Kalona at the age of 71 years.
He is survived by his wife Cindy of Kalona; three children Katrina (Travis Rotenburger) Surly of Crawfordsville, Adam (Megan) Surly of Plymouth, MN and Mark (Maria) Surly of Tiffin; four grandchildren Petra, Echo, Zhantel and Zeretta; a sister Rachel Wood of Missouri and her daughters Heather and Dawn; a brother Roger (Jennifer) Surly of Arkansas and their sons Taylor, Caleb, Garrett. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law Barry Wood.
A memorial service will be held 1:30 pm Monday, September 15, 2025 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. Burial will be in the Holy Trinity Cemetery rural Richmond. Visitation will be 12:00 to 1:00 pm Monday, September 15, 2025 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. A memorial fund has been established for Washington County Hospice.
