Richard Lewis Toler, Sr. was born on August 21, 1937 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to John Noble Toler and Esther (Wagner) Toler. He peacefully departed this life on November 21, 2024 in Sun City, Arizona.
On September 16, 1956, Richard married Ruth Corine Jones. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and devotion to their children. From this union, they raised four sons: Richard Lewis Toler, Jr. (Myrna), Nathaniel Alexzander Toler, Timothy Noble Toler (Cassandra), and Jamal Ohene Toler (Whitney). Richard prided himself on providing for his family and instilled the values of hard work and responsibility. Placing a high value on education, he always encouraged his children and grandchildren to excel in school.
Richard was a proud graduate of Cincinnati's Central High School, Class of 1956, where he trained as a carpenter. High school is where he developed a love of sports. He excelled in baseball and football. His teammates gave him the nickname "Tank" for his toughness on the football field. He passed this passion for sports to his sons, coaching some little league baseball and football teams and cheering them on from the sidelines.
A spiritual man, Richard served as a Deacon at El Bethel Baptist Church in Cincinnati and later became a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona. His faith was an ever-present force in his life.
A strong family man, he was a loving brother to his sister Helen (Toler) Doty, and brother Ralph. Richard was a proud grandfather to the Toler grandchildren: Gene, Jason, Justin, Brittany, Brandon, Armani, Jasmine, and Skylar, and a cheerful uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He shared a friendship with Doris Miliam, who brought joy to his later years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, brother Ralph and sons Timothy and Jamal.
Richard's memory will be celebrated for his resilience, faith, dedication to family, and love for life. He was an anchor of strength and inspiration who shaped the lives of everyone who knew him.
