Richard Vasquez Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rogers Mortuary - Las Vegas on Feb. 17, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Richard D. Vasquez Jr., 63, who entered eternal rest on February 4, 2026. He passed peacefully at his home in Rio Rancho after a long-standing heart condition.

Richard was born on July 7, 1963, in Las Vegas. He grew up in the Valleys of LeDoux and was the eldest of three children, alongside his brothers Terry and John Vasquez, born to the late Lora (Garcia) and Joe Richard Vasquez (Macho). As a young man, he played basketball for the Mora Rangers and graduated with the Class of 1982 from Mora High School. He later earned an associate degree from Luna Community College.

Richard proudly served his country in the Army National Guard. During Gulf War, he served as a heavy- and light-wheel vehicle mechanic and was awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal with one bronze star for his service.

He dedicated more than 20 years of his career as a correctional officer at the New Mexico State Hospital and later at a juvenile detention center in Albuquerque, where he was respected for his steady presence and commitment.

Those who knew Richard will always remember him as the life of the party. He loved cruising throughout New Mexico to visit family and friends, often spending hours laughing and sharing stories. He enjoyed cooking breakfast, fishing, and most of all, making lasting memories with his children and grandchildren. His warmth, humor, and generous spirit touched everyone he met.

Richard is survived by his children Aaron (Rachael), Jordon, Rylan, and Kyanna; and his beloved grandchildren MariAna, IsaBella, Leonidas, MiaRose, Jordynn, Araceli, and Joseph. He also leaves behind many cherished extended family members, including his Tia Martha, Tio Baudelio, Tia Rose, and Tia Georgia. His legacy of laughter, love, and togetherness will live on in all who knew him.

Rosary will be recited in Mora. NM at 7:00 p.m. at St. Gertrude Church. The Memorial Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Gertrude Church, with a reception to follow at the Mora VFW. All who knew and loved Richard are welcome to attend and celebrate his life. Interment will follow at LeDoux Cemetery in LeDoux, NM with the following serving as Pallbearers: Aaron, Jordon, Rylan, Terry, John, and JD Weathers
