Richard Young Obituary

Published by Legacy from Jul. 15 to Jul. 16, 2025.
Richard "Dick" Young passed away on July 12, 2025. He was born Feb 7,1932 in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Shaw High School in East Cleveland and Carnegie Tech in Pittsburg, PA. He married Doris Betler on Aug 23, 1952. Dick and Doris had 3 children, Karen Knapp, Craig (Kim) Young and Jill (Ron) Bick. He had 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Dick was the President of Young Truck Sales from 1954 to 1996. The company has remained in the family and is managed by the fourth generation.

Dick had an active community life, including serving as board member of the Canton JayCees and the Rotary Club. He was also on the board of Camp Tippecanoe and the Stark County Board of Development.

One of Dick's biggest passions was music. He started playing trumpet in 4th grade, and continued playing throughout college. The bonus to that trumpet playing was he met Doris in band in junior high! He sang with the Canton Civic Opera for 36 years. He was a board member for 10 years and president for 4 years. During his tenure with the organization they performed over 45 Broadway type shows, and he had leading roles in Music Man, Brigadoon and Showboat among many others. He also was the "Master of the House" in the company's Christmas Madrigal Feasts. Other musical endeavors near to his heart were singing in several church choirs, directing one of the choirs, and playing in a small combo at Carnegie Tech.

In addition to music, Dick enjoyed playing tennis, golf (he even got a hole-in-one while playing in NC!), taking his family camping and driving his ski boat on Salt Fork Lake.

After he retired in 1996, Doris and Dick moved to North Carolina, where they lived in Flat Rock in a golfing community. In 2005 they moved to Givens Estates in Asheville, NC. They lived there until Doris' death in 2023. At that point Dick moved back to North Canton, Ohio where he resided at Sanctuary Grande until his death. He enjoyed being back in Canton and revisiting many people and places from his working life.

A family remembrance service will be held at a later date. If anyone wishes to honor Dick's life donations to either of the charities he supported, Akron-Canton Food Bank (350 Opportunity Pkway Akron, Ohio 44307) or Carnegie-Mellon University (givenow.cmu.edu), would be gladly accepted. So many fond memories of Richard and Doris and family! My parents (Don and Audrey Vanek) were in CCO with Richard and our families became close not just at CCO but on many camping trips in Ohio and across multiple states. He was a kind and compassionate man who is now with his beloved Doris and I am sure making beautiful harmony with others from CCO! Rest in peace Richard you are the perpetual Music Man!

What wonderful memories we have of Dick in CCO, from tours, Broadway shows and concerts. So happy we caught up with him at the sanctuary. What a sweetheart! Patty and Toots Carmola
