Ricky A. Graber, 71, died July 20 at his home in Mt. Olive, Alabama after a long illness. He was born June 17, 1954 in Pratt, KS, the son of Bill and Ernestine (Vincent) Graber. Rick attended most of his school years in Pratt, and was a graduate of Larned High School after his family moved to Larned before his senior year. He later attended Barton County Community College and Wichita State University. He enjoyed working in various occupations but his true calling was working in the health field as an RN. He received the prestigious National Daisy Award in 2011 for outstanding patient care. He had worked in many areas including Med/Surg, ED, ICU, CVICU, cath lab and dialysis. He had even been known to sing for his patients, as singing was a life-long passion. Survivors include one daughter Rashelle (Matt) Schrag and one son Erik Graber; his father Bill Graber; sister Jo (Gil) Staab; brother Bill (Ann) Graber; grandchildren Ayden, Avery, Allison, Annah, and Aubree Schrag; an aunt, uncle, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ernestine. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorials have been suggested to the donor's choice in care of Livingston Funeral Home; 1830 N. Main; Kingman, KS 67068

Rick came into our school in Larned just in time to become the charismatic and charming leader of our amateur gospel choir. Believe it or not, up to 20 high schoolers would pile into their various and frequently unreliable vehicles and go singing Christian folk rock (?) at nearby churches. I was so glad he was in our gang. He taught me a lot about courage and kindness in leadership. Rest in power, maestro!

I was a school classmate of Ricky's in Pratt, Kansas. As I remember him, he always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. It doesn't surprise me that, as a nurse, Ricky provided special support and comfort to his patients. I'm sure he was a gift to many people in his life. I'm sorry to hear of his health issues and passing.
