Rita Sahr Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Coastal Cremations and Funeral Care - Virginia Beach on Oct. 1, 2025.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Rita E. Sahr, 98, of Virginia Beach, who left us peacefully on February 11, 2025. Born on November 22, 1926, in Framingham, MA, Rita was the daughter of Eleanor Carpinella and Terso Mespelli.
Rita's life was one of love, warmth, and devotion. She was a mother to Paula Herron, Maria McCarthey, Jan Gilman, and Christa Shirey. She is also survived by her beloved sisters, Jeanie McCarthey and Virginia Essex, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who held a special place in her heart.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Eleanor Carpinella and Terso Mespelli, her husband, Elmer Sahr, her daughter Patrice Benner, and her sisters Dorothy Loker and Elly Walker.
Known for her zest for life, Rita had a passion for traveling, going to the beach, playing tennis, tending to her flowers, and preparing delicious homemade Italian meals that brought joy to everyone around her. She also enjoyed doing her workouts at Wareing's Gym and enjoyed watching the New England Patriots as well as the Boston Celtics. She was a big fan of both Tom Brady and Jayson Tatum. Rita was a true social butterfly, always ready to spend time with family and friends, and her lively spirit was contagious.
In her earlier years, Rita was a dedicated homemaker, always putting her family first. Later in life, she found joy in her role as an activities coordinator for the City of Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Senior Citizen program, where she brightened the lives of many. Rita also volunteered at the bingo hall and helped in the café, always giving back to her community with a smile.
A woman of deep faith, Rita was raised Catholic, and her faith remained a guiding light throughout her life.
Rita's legacy of kindness, love, and community service will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Rita, please visit our Tree Store.
