Rita Spence Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors - Clawson on Jan. 28, 2026.
Rita Spence, age 86, passed away on January 25, 2026, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Born and raised in Southwest Detroit, then moved to Farmington Hills., Michigan. Rita carried a deep love for her roots, her family, and her community throughout her life. She was a devoted sister to Patricia Spence and the late Anna Burton, Lawley Gormely, Joanie Spence, and Kathryn Ingram. Rita also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews who were dear to her heart.

Rita retired at the age of 56 after 30 dedicated years with Michigan Bell/Ameritech. Retirement never slowed her down-she spent six winters enjoying the sunshine of Marco Island, Florida, and devoted countless hours to volunteering. An avid volunteer with the Telephone Pioneers, Rita also generously gave her time delivering food through Focus: HOPE and working for many years at the Festival of Trees.

Known for her generous spirit, Rita was always there for her family in times of need. Her faith and her family were the most important values in her life, guiding everything she did.

Rita had a joyful personality and a love for celebration-especially on St. Patrick's Day. She never missed the chance to dress head-to-toe in green, complete with Irish garb and her beloved shamrock "bong bong" headband. She was an avid Tigers Fan, especially her favorite player, Willie Horton. She also had a lifelong love of cars, a passion that brought her great happiness.

Rita will be remembered for her kindness, her generosity, her faith, and the love she shared. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit lives on in the many lives she touched.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 3077 Gloucester, Troy, Michigan 48084 (on Coolidge, between Big Beaver and Maple Roads), Friday, January 30, at 10am. Friends may visit beginning at 9:15am. Reception to follow.
