Robert attended Columbia University where he studied English Literature, graduating in 1972. While at Columbia, Robert formed a blues/rock band with his friends called The Sting Rays. The Sting Rays played at the West End, The Village Gate and CBGBs.

Robert was hired by the New York Cotton Exchange, where his father had worked for many years. He became a clerk and then a commodities trader with seats on the NY Cotton Exchange, the Coffee, Cocoa and Sugar Exchange, the Comex Exchange and the NY Mercantile Exchange.

Bob and I grew up down the street from each other on Midland Ave. I can remember playing endless hours of basketball at his home.
We played on the St Ann´s CYO basketball team that went 26-1. He was so dominant along with Fr. Frank Samoylo his AM teammate. Our paths diverged- I went to Nyack HS.
I saw him a few times during the years and the conversation was always pleasant.
Our Lord has reunited him with his wife.
God Bless you Bobby.
My condolences to his children and grandchildren.

Bob Ahrens was a good teammate and friend. Bob made everyting seem easy. Whether it was hitting a fall away jumper, being the lead singer in a band, or dating his future wife, Monica, it never seemed like he was straining, struggling, or trying too hard.

One summer we worked constuction together at a Volkwagon warehouse in Orangetown. We had to haul concrete blocks up to the roof of the building via a pulley and then wheelbarrow them to the masons. There were many days when we were the only ones on the roof and we spent most of those days just talking. After working on the roof in the hot sun all day Bob and I sometimes drove over to the Orangetown lighted courts to play a little basketball. Oh, what a gift to be young and have that kind of energy.

Sometime during that summer we hopped in some little foreign car that Bob had and headed up to Newport for the Folk Festival. I remember we had no place to sleep and ended up spending the night dozing among the pews in a church that left its doors unlocked for kids like us. Later that summer Bob and I, and longime friends Jon Sidoli and Mike O´Reilly went to Woodstock together. What a summer.

Like most high school and college friends, our lives became consumed by careers and raising families, but we´d meet at HS Reunions and pick up our friendship without any awkwardness. Like I said, Bob made everything seem easy.

Losing him is not.

Bobby was my idol on the trading floor. When I was starting out as a clerk on the Cotton Exchange, Bobby was already a huge trader in Orange Juice. I enjoyed many days talking to him about blue grass music and live outdoor concerts. Many years later I had the pleasure of playing backgammon with him when the markets were slow. Through the 30 years that I knew Bobby he was always a gentleman to everyone that had the great privilege to have known him. Rest easy my friend...
