Robert Charles Andrew Simmons, known as "Big Rob", "Poppa Dop", "Daddy" was born on March 5, 1967, in Paget Parish, Bermuda. He was the 1st child born to Pamela Simmons. When Rob was an infant, they moved to
Mount Vernon, NY and later to Virginia when he was a teenager.
Once in Virginia, Rob was educated in
Hampton, VA school system. Rob and his 757 Crew made plenty trouble in Virginia with friends. Rob grew up very close to his mom and her numerous siblings. Because of his upbringing, Rob became a father figure to: Ronnie Pitcher, Kamron Whitining, Jamel, Jashun and Jahvon Thomas, the entire St. David's community, and also to others overseas.
In 1990, Rob relocated to NJ, where he met the love of his life, Sarah Thomas. They fell in love and quickly became a family unit. Robert & Sarah married in October of 1992, and decided to raise their children in Bermuda.
In his adult years, Rob worked as a master carpenter and was well known throughout Bermuda's construction community. He was a part of building Cedar bridge, Tynes Bay and Berkeley Institute and much more throughout Bermuda and overseas. Robert met along the way special work colleagues that quickly became family. Him and his wife later launched their own construction company, POWERHOUSE CONSTRUCTION, which over the years employed several family members as well as many youths in the community. Anyone who knows or lives with a 'Simmons Man' knows the strengths and gifts are plentiful – from having a green thumb, to constructing homes to being a Master Sous Chef most recently in a New Jersey restaurant to raising children. You name it Rob was the ultimate Man's man and Family Man. Rob truly did spend every moment and all his energy and time on family matters and joyfully watched his family grow. He was a devoted husband and father. He always put his family first and gave them all a beautiful life. He was also a protector over his family and always had their back in anything they needed.
Rob's personality was larger than life from a young age and he loved getting around all members of the family, sharing hours of laughter. He would often prove to be the glue which bought the family and cousins together. He developed special bonds with cousins, Davita Clarke, Tamara Crawford, Quincy Simmons and Jermaine Simmons, Zaid Simmons and E.J. Johnson when visiting Bermuda most of his summers. You either found Rob at his Aunt Francis' or Aunt Gloria's homes, fishing off the docks or making trouble with his cousins Troy 'Rizla', John Simmons and Michael Simmons. Ask any of Rob's cousins who will tell you that Rob was the "favorite" grandson of Momma Simmons; which was easily proven when the boys would be lined up for a whoopin follow some boyhood shenanigan and Rob was singled out "Not you Baby". Rob was not just her favorite, but the favorite of his family and ultimately Bermuda at large. He will be greatly missed.
Rob was predeceased by his mother, Pamela Simmons; his stepfather, Charles Harris; aunts and uncles: Ivan Clarke, Leroy Lightbourne, Francis Clark Nesbitt, John Simmons, Anne Marie Saltus, and Rudolph Simmons
