Robert Lee Atencio of Broomfield Colorado passed away surrounded by family at home on Wednesday, December 24, 2025. He was 84 years old.
Robert, or Bob as many called him, was born at home on December 31, 1940 in Serene, CO to Anita Atencio (Borrego) and Abraham Lincoln Atencio.
Bob grew up in
Lafayette, CO with his parents, older brother Joseph, and younger sister Elaine. He joined the US Navy with friends at age 18 on his last day of high school. While in the Navy, he worked as a radar specialist and traveled the world on the USS Franklin D Roosevelt. After leaving the Navy, he returned home to Lafayette and met and fell in love with Charlotte Lee Kendall. Charlotte and Bob were married in Missouri on July 6, 1965 with her family present. They then returned to Lafayette to marry at Immaculate Conception Church with local family and friends on July 10, 1965. While he never forgot an anniversary, Bob joked if he did there was another right behind to make up for it.
Charlotte and Bob had a daughter Stephanie in 1966, followed by a son Jeffrey in 1969. Bob worked as a carpenter contributing to many new buildings around Denver and in the metro area, including installing the bleachers at Folsom field. He then began working at Rio Grande Railroad in 1976. Over his tenure he worked as a switchman, brakeman, and conductor. In 1977 the family moved to Broomfield Colorado. They welcomed their third child Jennifer in 1980.
Bob was a proud Broncos season ticket holder for over 40 years. He and Charlotte attended several Super Bowls over the years, including one win! He also served as a juror in the Timothy McVeigh Oklahoma City bombing trial in 1997. He retired from the railroad – then Union Pacific – after more than 30 years of service. Then empty nesters, Bob and Charlotte enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren, never missing an event from a band concert to a soccer game, and traveling the world, including China, Alaska, and Europe. Bob also enjoyed researching his ancestry and genealogy in his later years. Bob was an avid baker, enjoying making his famous fudge, cookies and other baked goods. Additionally, he enjoyed gardening and photographing wildlife, whether in the mountains or the birds at his birdfeeders in the backyard.
Bob is survived by his wife, Charlotte, children, Stephanie and Jeff Carpenter, Jeff and Staci Atencio, Jennifer Atencio-Brown and Travis Brown, his sister Elaine Robledo, 10 grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces and grand dogs. He was preceded in death by his parents, Abraham and Anita Atencio and his brother Joseph Atencio.
Robert's services will be held at Rundus Funeral Home in Broomfield on Friday, January 2, 2026. A visitation will start at 10am. The service will follow at 11am.
Robert will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and son. His loving and kind nature, hard work ethic, and wonderful sense of humor will not be forgotten.
