Robert J. Avery Sr.

Robert J. Avery, Sr., 89, of Somers, CT, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 26, 2025, at Mercy Medical Center.

Born on December 18, 1935, at home in the Thompsonville section of Enfield, CT, he was the son of the late Ernest and Mary (Forrest) Avery. Bob grew up in Enfield and attended Enfield High School before entering the workforce to help support his family.

On October 10, 1959, he married the love of his life, Vivian Wezowicz, with whom he shared 65 wonderful years. They brought up their family in Enfield before moving to Somers in 1997 where they built many cherished memories together. Bob retired from Dexter NonWovens, and he and his family enjoyed spending as much time as possible at their second home on Lake George, where he especially loved fishing and enjoyed sitting by the water enjoying the view. He had a passion for hunting, fishing, and woodworking.

Bob will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Vivian Avery; his children, Sherry Avery of Somers, Robert J. Avery, Jr. and his wife Wendy of Colchester, and Karen Szymko and her husband Thomas of Somers; and his treasured grandchildren, Meagan Avery, Zachary Szymko, and Erin Avery. He also leaves behind his sister in-law and brother in-law, Stasia and Bill Buss along with his nieces Theresa Buss, Samantha Baer and nephew Bill Buss. He was predeceased by his brothers Richard Avery, Ronald Avery, and Edward Avery, and his sister Joan Curran.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 3–5 p.m. at Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St., Somers, CT.
