He was born on December 20, 1934 in Waverly, Kansas to Ivan and Angie Knight Barrett.
Galen married Georgia Ward on June 23, 1962 in Ottawa, Kansas. She died in 2016.
Galen graduated from Waverly High School in 1953. He received B.S. and Masters degrees in education from Emporia State University. He retired in 1994 having taught in Agricola, Gridley, Emporia, and Parsons.
Galen was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his students, travel, and gardening.
Galen is survived by sister Winifred Fields (Andy), nephew Justin Fields, great nephews Justin P., Roy Fields (Ellie), and Jamerson Fields.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Burlington Methodist Church Youth Group (BMC Youth Group).
Cremation is planned.
The family will meet with friends at 1:00 P.M. Monday, August 19, 2024, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington before proceeding the Graceland Cemetery for graveside Memorial Services at 2:00 P.M.
