It is with deep sorrow we share that Robert Edward Benjamin II, age 31, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023.
Rob was born in Southfield, Michigan on July 23, 1991 as the second child to his loving parents, Mary and Tom. Always highly intelligent, Rob graduated in 2009 with honors from Harrison High School in Farmington Hills. He also attended Michigan State University.
Rob spent five years in Singapore, between the ages of 3-8 years old. While very young, it left a big impact on Rob because of the education, travel, culture, and friends from around the world. Plus, jumping in the pool everyday and enjoying tandoori chicken and naan in Little India.
Rob was passionate and creative. He wrote, sang, and produced his own songs and videos. He was an athlete, and enjoyed riding his bike and playing basketball and soccer with friends in Farmington Hills and on Mackinac Island. Rob loved his summers on the island; the boating, biking, swimming, fun jobs and creating mischief with cousins and friends.
Rob's faith was important to him. He had a close relationship with Jesus and his family knows he was welcomed into heaven with open arms.
Rob struggled with his mental health for many years. There were times when he was really suffering. He is at peace now.
Rob cared deeply for his family and friends; he was always so proud of their accomplishments. He is survived by his parents, Tom and Mary (Cleary) Benjamin, sister Libby Benjamin, brother Sam Benjamin, grandmother Beverly Benjamin, aunts and uncles Mike Benjamin (Beth), Jane Young (Glen), godparents Jerry Cleary (Henley), Kathy Leh (Jim), Sean Cleary (Carol), and James Cleary (Kim), and many cousins and friends.
Rob was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather and namesake, Robert Edward Benjamin, and maternal grandparents Warren and Muriel Cleary.
A memorial service will be held at the Little Stone Church on Mackinac Island on Tuesday, June 13th at 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Rob's memory to the National Association on Mental Illness (https://nami.org/Home), Little Stone Church (http://www.littlestonechurch.com), or Mackinac Island Community Foundation; Mary R. and Wesley H. Maurer Fund - "to improve the lives of disadvantaged residents and animals in the Mackinac Island community" (https://www.micf.org/funds.htm).
