Bob Smith, 69, of Spencer, Iowa, died peacefully at home on Sept 24, 2025
He was born in Estherville Iowa, in 1955 to Frederick and Veronica (Hayostek) Smith and was the third of six children. Bob attended Spencer High School before heading to Alaska at age 18, the day after graduation in 1974, to work on the construction of the Alaska Pipeline with his good friend, Gary.
He was so proud of his adopted state, Alaska and all it offered, enjoyed the hunting and fishing and made lifelong friends there. He married Teresa Johansen 1986; the marriage ended in 2017. From that marriage, he became a dad to son Josh. In 1988 they returned to Spencer, where Bob worked at Stylecraft for 20 years. He was semi-retired when completing his work life at Specialty Archery in 2023.
He enjoyed sharing time with family and friends, fond of old, old movies, history, visiting with people during day to day activities, and watching Iowa and Iowa State sports. He had many pet dogs over the years and was a supporter of People For Pets.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brother Rick, and niece Lindsay. He is survived by his son Joshua, granddaughters Hailey and Jasmine, siblings Terry (Carolyn), Diane, Laurie (Del), Mike, nieces and nephews Chad (Michele), Nathan (Simone), Ben (Amanda), Jordan (Shelby), Megan (Cody), Logan, Lucas and grand nieces and nephews Shayla, Blane, Brantley, Cambrie and Hazel. Many lifelong friends and extended family also.
A celebration of all that was Bob is October 1 from 4 to 7 pm at Gary’s on the River. Bob would wish any memorial contributions be made to People For Pets.
