Robert Buchenauer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. - Dale City on Feb. 13, 2026.
Robert Lee Buchenauer, known as Bob, passed away on January 27, 2026. He was born April 12, 1940 to Joseph and Erma (Demy) Buchenauer, who preceded him in death. Bob was a man of quiet strength, deep integrity, and an adventurous spirit who lived a life devoted to his family, his country, and service to others. For 36 years he shared a loving marriage with his wife, Pamela Jean Kelley Buchenauer. They built a wonderful life and partnership, even working together in his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Pam, his younger sisters, Carol Gockley and Judy (Roy) Armold, as well as his nieces and nephews: Kim Turley, Tim (Linda) Gockley, Julie (Jim) Miller, and Scott (Krista) Armold. He also leaves behind many great-nieces and great-nephews, along with numerous cousins who will remember him fondly.

From an early age, Bob's life reflected discipline, hard work, and wide-ranging interests. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, a distinction that spoke to his character and leadership. In high school, he ran his own potato chip route business, played multiple sports, and played trumpet in the band. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Penn State University, where he also participated in ROTC, serving as a commandant his senior year. This laid the foundation for a remarkable military career. His passion for aviation led him to earn a commercial pilot's license, another testament to his drive and precision.

Bob served his country with honor during a 27-year career in the United States Air Force, ultimately retiring with the rank of Colonel. A biochemist by training, he taught pre-med students at the United States Air Force Academy and held positions of significant responsibility, including serving as Head of the Clinical Laboratory at Andrews Air Force Base. Even after retirement, his sense of duty endured, he was recalled to service during Desert Storm.

In retirement, Bob continued to serve in his own way. Concerned that young people were not learning history in a meaningful way, he founded a tour guide company for eighth-grade students, ensuring they had the opportunity to learn history firsthand. Teaching, mentoring, and inspiring curiosity brought him great satisfaction.

Those who knew Bob will remember his steady presence, thoughtful nature, and unwavering commitment to doing what was right, as well as his fearless spirit of adventure. His legacy lives on through those he loved, the friends he made and kept, the countless students he taught, and the life of service he lived so well.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 20, 2026 from 3pm-5pm and 6pm-7pm at Mountcastle Turch Life Celebration Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, VA. A service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2026 at 11am at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 14999 Birchdale Ave., Dale City, VA.
