It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Robert Chatmon. On behalf of the staff and management of Strong & Jones Funeral Home, Inc., we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Robert Chatmon.
Robert Samuel Chatmon, a man of unwavering faith and service, entered eternal rest on April 27, 2025. He was born on February 4, 1940, in Talladega, Alabama, to the late Charlie White and Lucy (Chatmon) Ashley.
From an early age, Robert was deeply rooted in his faith and community. He began his spiritual journey at Africa Missionary Baptist Church in Talladega, Alabama, and later found his spiritual home at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Cairo, Georgia. There, he served faithfully as Chairman of the Deacon Board and was honored as Man of the Year multiple times for his steadfast leadership and service. After relocating to Tallahassee, Florida, Robert became an active member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, choir member, and volunteer for Bethel Towers, a senior living facility where he supported the residents with genuine care and kindness.
Robert graduated from Robert Russa Moton High School in Sycamore, Alabama. He went on to pursue higher education at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education in 1963. While at Alabama A&M, he became a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated®, Gamma Epsilon Chapter in 1962, a brotherhood that helped shape his lifelong commitment to service.
Robert's life was also marked by deep love for his family. While at Alabama A&M, he met Barbara (Holt) Chatmon, and their union was blessed with two daughters, Karen and Christy.
Robert began his professional career teaching Vocational Agriculture at Lyons Industrial High School in Lyons, Georgia, from 1963 to 1966. He then joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development (formerly Farmers Home Administration), where he dedicated over 30 years to strengthening rural communities.
As District Director of Southwest Georgia based in Albany and previously as County Supervisor in Cairo, Camilla, Blakley, and Ocilla, Robert helped countless families and farmers gain access to housing, community water systems, and other essential rural resources. He also mentored numerous young professionals in vocational agriculture, helping shape future leaders and expand opportunities in rural development across Georgia.
A devoted father and family man, Robert leaves behind his daughters, Karen (Chatmon) Smith and Christy Chatmon; his brother, Charles (Bessie) Ashley; and sisters, Earlene Chatmon, Maxine (Bobby) Zinnermon, Patty (James) Chatman Haines, and Verma (Jeff) Chatman; and grandchildren, Joshua Smith and Aaron Smith. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, as well as fraternity brothers, church members, and lifelong friends who will always remember his kind heart, gentle strength, and steadfast dedication.
Robert's life was one of dignity, service, and compassion. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he loved, taught, mentored, and uplifted. In this time of remembrance, we ask that you keep the Chatmon family in your thoughts and prayers.
May the light of his love, wisdom, and faith continue to shine through all who were touched by his life.
Life Celebration will be 11:00AM, Friday May 9, 2025 at Bethel M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Tallahassee Memory Gardens. Send flowers to the service of Mr. Robert Samuel Chatmon
