Robert Chinn Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Oct. 27 to Oct. 30, 2011.
Robert Scott Chinn

Robert Scott Chinn, who moved to Charlottesville to attend graduate school at the University of Virginia and later worked at several area hotels, died of lung cancer on Monday, October 24, 2011, at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He was 60. Mr. Chinn, who was known as Scott, was born in Beaumont, Texas, the son of Charles Brian Chinn, a transportation executive, and Barbara H. Chinn, a teacher. The family moved frequently during Mr. Chinn's childhood. He graduated in 1968 from Marblehead High School in Marblehead, Massachusetts, where he excelled in academics.

He attended the University of Chicago for two years, then earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He was accepted into the doctorate program in economics at the University of Virginia in 1981, having never taken a formal class in economics. He was self-taught in that field and several others, including the Russian and Latin languages. A highly skilled chess player, he enjoyed playing matches on-line against opponents all over the world. He also enjoyed crafting pithy on-line reviews of often obscure films.

Raised in the Unitarian Church, Mr. Chinn became a devout Catholic as an adult. He attended mass at both St. Thomas Aquinas and Holy Comforter Catholic Churches in Charlottesville. He worked as a desk clerk, night auditor, and assistant manager at hotels in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Charlottesville, most recently at the Comfort Inn University, where he worked until becoming ill in July. He moved in September to his sister, Barbara's home in Baltimore, where she cared for him until he was hospitalized. He is survived by two loving sisters and their husbands, Barbara and Richard Newbauer of Baltimore, Maryland, and Elizabeth and Charles Lean of Woodstock, Maryland; nephews and nieces, Max and Adriane Newbauer, Jackson and Megan Newbauer, and Spencer Lean; a great-niece and a great-nephew. Mr. Chinn will be buried at New Cathedral Cemetery in Baltimore. Services are private. Arrangements by Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home in Towson, Maryland.

Donations in Mr. Chinn's memory may be made to Union Memorial Hospital Foundation in Baltimore, Maryland.

Over the last ten years there have been many times when something has happened and Scott would come to mind. He was such a witty person, always ready with the perfect comment. I miss him very much. He was like the brother I never had. The person I could talk to about anything. I hope to see him again one day.

I was crushed when you died. We never got to say goodbye.

I knew Scott when we were teenagers together at Marblehead High School in Massachusetts. He was smart as anything, clever and witty, fun to be with, kind and thoughtful. I remember laughing with him so hard that we were crying. I counted him among my friends, though we didn't keep in touch. I just attended my 50th reunion, and Scott was sorely missed.

To the Chinn Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you during the passing of your loved one.
I met Scott at the Best Western Cavailer in Charlottesville. He was my training supervisor for the night audit. He was a wonderful co-worker to work with. He will be truly missed.

Perhaps many of you may be unaware of the impact that Scott Chinn had on many of us on the on line gaming community of GoldToken. Under the nom de plume of "luctruc", he was not only a good friend and confidante there but also a major contributor to the causes he so passionately believed in, including the religious discussion board and other groups on site. A small bit of trivia for most of you reading this perhaps but I wanted you all to know the breadth of the impact that he had on so many of us who never met him and wished we had. He is and will be sorely missed by many you may be unaware of. May God bless him eternally along with all his friends and family!

Whenever I was at the Chinns', it was ostensibly to visit the sisters, but equally likely in hopes of catching a glimpse of Scott, who I worshipped from afar for his combination of smarts, humor, and good looks. My deepest condolences to your entire family. I hope you are comforted by the knowledge that Scott's assets are shared by many of the rest of you, and that you made his last days as easy as possible.
With heartfelt sympathy and love,

Scott was my best friend. He was always willing to help me with any problems I had. He had a brilliant mind and there was no topic that he was no fully informed on. He was caring, intelligent and funny, Scott was like no other person, he was unique and irreplaceable. He was a good man. I miss you Scott and I will see you again.

My Condolences to his family,

October 27, 2011

We have never met Scott but we are friends with his sister Barbara and we have also met Elizabeth and if Scott was anything like his sisters he must of been a wonderful caring person.
Our Condolences to all his family
