Robert Conroy Obituary

Robert Daniel Conroy of Indian River Shores, Florida and Dorset, Vermont passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025 in Vero Beach. He was 88 years old.

Born in the Bronx, New York to Walter I. and Regina Conroy and raised in Pelham, New York, Robert was the youngest of three sons. He graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy and later studied at Iona College and St Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont. He entered the U. S. Army and was attached to the Air Force as a Flight Operations Specialist at Ft. Huachuca, AZ where he served with honor and distinction and was commended for saving the lives of two pilots.

After his service, Robert went to work briefly for his brother in the insurance business where he met his future bride, Ruth. They were married in 1960 and moved to East Norwalk, Connecticut. Robert set out on his own as an agent for a major insurance company where he enjoyed success as a consistent top producer. In 1974, they moved with their four children to Shelter Island, New York where he took some time off to enjoy time with family, tennis, boating and fishing.

Robert loved a challenge and he found his next when he decided to purchase a marina on the south shore of Long Island. He often said these were the most fun years of his life. He was able to use his innate creativity, ingenuity and keen business sense to maximize the potential and transform the boat yard into a vibrant full service marina. Eventually, he sold the business to a competitor and he was ready for his next adventure.

In the late 80's, Robert purchased Chez Yannick Restaurant and the Riviera Inn in Vero Beach, Florida.

He brought fresh ideas along with his personal management style, and the restaurant thrived like never before. He sold the businesses in 2004.

Robert loved his family and loved life. He loved Vermont, bringing down trees and splitting logs, creating and building things, and was always mentally and physically active. Robert possessed a keen wit and sharp sense of humor, and was truly one of a kind.

Robert was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Ruth, and his son, Drew. He will be greatly missed by his children, Tricia Levitt of Indian River Shores, FL, Cary Conroy of Danbury, CT, and Heather Selis (Ronald) of Portland, OR, and grandchildren, Chet Selis, Ruby Selis, Marina Conroy and Brian Vittozzi, as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.

A private celebration of Robert's life will be held in late June.

Arrangements are under the direction of Millennium Cremation Service, Vero Beach. Condolences may be shared online at www.millenniumcremationservice.com.
