Robert C. Dahl, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at his home in
Evanston, Illinois, the city where he was born and spent most of his life.
Born on September 19, 1941, to William and Katherine Dahl, Robert - known affectionately as Bob - was a proud lifelong resident of the community he loved. His roots ran deep in Evanston, and his presence left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Bob dedicated his professional life to serving others as a mailman for the Evanston Post Office. During more than 35 years of walking his routes, he became a familiar and friendly face to countless residents. His commitment extended beyond daily deliveries; he was involved in advocating for his fellow workers through the letter carrier's union, including a stint serving as the union's president.
Outside of work, Bob was a familiar and beloved presence in the community theater scene across Chicago's North Shore. His passion for the stage spanned decades, during which he brought warmth, humor, and depth to dozens of productions. His talent and charisma left lasting impressions on audiences and fellow performers alike. A couple of his favorite productions were Neil Simon's "The Sunshine Boys" and "Barefoot in the Park."
Bob was an avid baseball fan with a unique allegiance to both the Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees. A recent trip to Yankee Stadium in New York and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY was a highlight of his final years. Whether cheering from the stands at Wrigley Field, or following games from home, baseball brought him endless excitement throughout his life. He also enjoyed reading, dancing, and in his younger years- swimming in Lake Michigan. Social by nature, Bob thrived at large gatherings and parties - his happiest moments were spent surrounded by people. He had an extraordinary gift for making new friends wherever he went.
One of Bob's most endearing quirks was his remarkable memory for birthdays. Friends and acquaintances alike were often astonished by his on-the-spot ability to recall not only their special days, but also those of random celebrities and public figures. He could meet someone once and remember their birthday for years. It was just one of many ways he made others feel seen and remembered.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris Dahl; his parents William and Katherine Dahl; his sister Dorothy; and his brother John Dahl. He is survived by his children: David Dahl (partner Lisa), Diane Chaine, and Michelle Lembcke (husband Mike), four grandchildren: Falynne (husband Josh), Patrick (wife Sydnee), Christopher (Kat), and Kendra, and 3 great-grandchildren: Hunter, Colsen, and Blakelyn.
Robert Dahl's warmth, humor, and generosity touched many lives over the years. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and joy to those who remember him fondly.
