In Loving Memory of Robert Earl Engelson
September 11, 1948 – June 30, 2025
It is with extremely heavy hearts that we share the passing of Robert Engelson, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Robert was a true original - full of life, love, stories that could fill a room, and jokes that would have you doubled over - or rolling your eyes. His generosity knew no bounds, and if anyone wanted the loud Hawaiian shirt off his back, he'd gladly give it to them. He had a deep knowledge of Tampa's history and development - and had a particular love for devil crabs and Cuban sandwiches.
Robert was a dreamer with many talents and passions. He was once the Florida State Bowling Champion and even competed in the Masters. He was a gifted musician and songwriter who performed under the name "Bobby Ammo," an expert angler, a walking sports almanac, an armchair political analyst, and a witty comedian who could bring levity to even the most serious moments.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve during the Vietnam War and later retired from the United States Postal Service. In his later years, weekends found him at Pete's Place, where he performed karaoke to an adoring crowd - his rendition of "Jump in the Line" was a guaranteed conga line starter. Even at 70 years old he auditioned (and got to the second round) of America's Got Talent. He never stopped chasing his dreams.
Robert was predeceased by his loving parents, Earle and Rosalie. He leaves behind a devoted and loving family who will forever carry his memory: his children, Andrew Engelson, Seth (Veronica) Engelson, and Kristen Engelson; his grandchildren Brianna Vergara, Nolan Engelson, and Davis Engelson; his great-granddaughter, Alexis Vergara; and his sisters, Nancy (Trava) Alston and Marlene Powers.
His indomitable sense of humor, kind soul, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, laughter, and love.
Please join us for a celebration of his life which will be held at Boza & Roel Funeral Home on Thursday, July 10th, with a viewing beginning at 11:00 a.m. and a service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.
