David A. Engelson

David A. Engelson, a lifelong educator and community leader, passed away peacefully in South Windsor, Connecticut on Tuesday December 30th 2025. He was the son of the late Fay and Jack Engelson and was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan, and his brother, Lenny Engelson. A devoted family man, David married the love of his life, Susan, in 1973, and they shared 41 wonderful years together until her passing on June 28, 2015. He is survived by his son, Marc Engelson (wife Robyn, son Zach), and his daughter, Amy Jerusalmi (husband Alan, sons Caleb and Eli). David will be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, and respected leader whose life's work was rooted in education, civic engagement, and improving the lives of others.
Born with a passion for learning and leadership, David earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1967, followed by a Master of Science degree in 1970. He continued advanced postgraduate study at the University of Connecticut.
David's career in education spanned more than four decades. He served as Principal of Scotland Elementary School in Scotland, Connecticut, Lake Street School and Center Road School in Vernon. Earlier in his career, he taught at Hampton Elementary School and served as an adjunct faculty member at Eastern Connecticut State University.
In 2002, David became the Executive Director and later Chief Executive Officer of Hockanum Valley Community Council, Inc., where he played a key role in driving community services and social support programs.
David also held numerous leadership roles in civic and health organizations, including Rockville General Hospital, Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN), Rockville Area Health Services, and Vernon Community Network.
A devoted member of Congregation B'nai Israel, David served as President, Vice President, education committee chairman, and Men's Club co-president.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 2nd, at 11am, at Temple Beth Sholom B'nai Israel, 400 Middle Turnpike East, Manchester. Burial will follow in Congregational B'nai Israel Cemetery, Edith Road, Vernon. Shiva will be observed on Saturday, January 3rd.
