Robert Engen, age 89 of Newport, Minnesota was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 5, 2024.
A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodbury Lutheran Church – Oak Hill Campus, 9050 60th Street North, Stillwater, Minnesota, 55082. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. with lunch following service.
Robert was born on August 6, 1935 in Clearbrook, Minnesota to Ole and Sarah Engen. He was one of 11 children. He spent his early years helping on the family farm.
Robert enlisted in the Army on September 28, 1956 and served part of his service in Korea. He was honorably discharged January 17, 1958.
Robert met his soulmate, Shirley at a barn dance and they were married on December 30, 1961. They lived in Mohall, North Dakota for several years before moving to Newport, Minnesota in 1968.
Robert joined the Newport Fire Department as a volunteer in 1970. He became Fire Chief in 1981 and retired in 2005.
Robert lived out his faith in Jesus in serving others. He was devoted to Shirley and took care of her during her final years visiting her daily and sitting by her side. He loved his family and whenever there was an issue with cars, homes, or physical bodies, he came through every time. He made sure the family's needs were met and our dreams were accomplished. Robert never missed an event for his children or grandchildren. If he was not coaching, he was always in the front row cheering us on. Robert adored his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. He also loved serving neighbors by doing yard work and snowplowing after big snowfalls.
Robert was an active member of Woodbury Lutheran Church where he enjoyed volunteering his time. Robert and Shirley also loved to travel. They enjoyed many camping trips when the children were young.
Robert is preceded in Heaven by his wife Shirley, parents Ole and Sarah Engen and siblings. Survived by his children Kyle (Maria), Kelvin, Eldon (Sandy), and Brenda; grandchildren Tony (Angie), Jacob, Bailey (Ryan), and Kelsey (Nick) and great grandchildren, Kourtlyn, Logan and brother Lloyd and many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to the staff at Artis Senior Living in Woodbury, Minnesota and Hospice of the Midwest for their wonderful care of Robert and helping make his final days peaceful and full of love.
