Robert Louis Goethals

June 22, 1927 - January 26, 2024

Bob Goethals, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Bob and Mr. Friendly passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on January 26, 2024.

Born in Union Center, IN on June 22, 1927 to Charles and Verneatha Goethals, Bob was a lifelong resident of the area.

On June 25, 1955, he married Alice Doms at St Joseph Catholic Church in LaPorte. She preceded him in death in 2015.

Bob is survived by his 5 children, Charles (Brenda), Judy (Erv) Jourdan, Rich (Donna), Bob (Shelly) and Marialice (Terry) Sells. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Jakob (Shana), Samantha, Jon (Simone), Grant (Andrea), Camille as well as his 2 sisters Jane Szilagyi and Pat VanDierendonck. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack, sister Evelyn, and grandson Ryan Charles.

After graduating high school, Bob proudly served in the United States Marine Corp. Bob retired from Wilson Lumber in 1992 after almost 30 years. He also worked as a farmer, auto mechanic, delivery truck driver and carpenter. He was an avid bowler and card player who also enjoyed going for long leisurely car rides with his family, spending a day at a tractor pull, attending Notre Dame Women’s Basketball games and watching Notre Dame football. He and his lovely wife of almost 60 years were well known for their graceful, beautiful waltzing, jitterbug and polka dancing. But most of all Bob enjoyed spending time with his family, finding special joy in the time he shared with grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave, La Porte, IN, where the family will hold a viewing on Monday, January 29, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a wake service at 6:30 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 C.
