Steinke Funeral Home - RensselaerRobert Louis Gonczy, fondly known as Bob, was born on August 4, 1940, in Chicago, IL and passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, in Merrillville, IN. He lived a life characterized by dedication to his family, unwavering patriotism, and a commitment to his community.
Bob's education culminated in his graduation from Morocco High School in 1959, after which he earned the distinction of serving honorably in the U.S. Army, reflecting his deep sense of duty to his country as a proud veteran.
Throughout his life, Bob was well-regarded for his contributions to his profession as a carpenter. He possessed a wonderful skill in woodworking, which allowed him to create not just practical pieces but also treasured memories for those around him. His passion extended beyond his craft; he enjoyed sight-seeing and visiting old monuments and cemeteries, which speaks to his appreciation for history and the stories of those who came before him.
Family was at the forefront of Bob's life. He was a devoted husband to Barbara Gonczy of Rensselaer, IN, and a loving father to four children: Bob (Diane) Gonczy of Morocco, IN, Donald Gonczy of Lafayette, IN, Ronald (Tammy) Gonczy of Morocco, IN and Robyn (Derek) Kormendy of Morocco, IN. He took immense pride in being a good father, ensuring that his family felt loved and supported.
Bob was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, who brought joy and laughter into his life. He cherished the time spent with them, showcasing his kind-hearted nature, characterized by his humor and warmth—a steadfast smile that could light up any room.
His siblings remain: one sister, Elizabeth Boyd, and one brother, Louis (Carma) Gonczy. While his family has endured the heartache of loss with the passing of one daughter, Barbara Renee Gonczy, as well as his parents, Louis and Elizabeth (Dickenson) Gonczy, and three brothers: Michael, Patrick, and Charlie Gonczy, Bob's legacy of love and the support he provided will continue to resonate within the hearts of many.
In addition to his familial roles, Bob contributed to his community as the Past Commander of the Newton County American Legion, marking another one of his proudest accomplishments. He was known not only for his kindness and willingness to help others but also for embodying the spirit of joy and generosity.
To honor Bob's remarkable life, the family is planning a Celebration of Life, including military honors, will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 2 p.m. at the Lake Village Community Center, located at 9728 N. 300 W, Lake Village, IN. Family, friends, and community members are encouraged to gather and share memories of a man who left an indelible mark on the lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lake Village American Legion.
Bob Louis Gonczy will be remembered fondly, his spirit of kindness, humor, and dedication living on in all who had the privilege to know him.
