Robert Gross Obituary

ROBERT "BOB" GROSS, 98, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on March 31, 2026. A decorated veteran, accomplished accountant, and devoted family man, Bob lived a life defined by service, integrity, and deep affection for those he held dear.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bertha and his brothers Charles and Edward. Bob was devoted to his family and much loved by his wife of 70 years, the late Virginia; his children and their loving spouses: Robert and Ann Gross, Lisa and Brian Bontempo and Stephanie and David Lowe. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Carolina Barta (John), Thomas W. Gross (Emma), Garrett and Michael Bontempo, Hailey and Griffin Lowe and great grandsons Jack and Henry Barta.

Bob was born on May 10, 1927, in Erie, Pennsylvania, to Charles and Bertha. After completing high school, he answered his country's call to service, first with the U.S. Merchant Marine and later with the United States Army during World War II, where he served with distinction in Belgium and France, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Bob was also decorated with the World War II Victory Medal. His courage and commitment during those formative years stayed with him throughout his long life.

Following the war, Bob earned a Bachelor's degree from Gannon University and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant. He launched his professional career with Ernst & Ernst (now EY), before joining one of his clients, Hupp Corporation, which was subsequently acquired by White Consolidated Industries. Bob dedicated the remainder of his career to White, relocating over the years to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and later back to Cleveland, Ohio, all the while traveling extensively in service to his work. He was known for his professionalism, his keen financial mind, and his unwavering work ethic.

Above all else, Bob was devoted to his family. He shared 70 cherished years of marriage with his beloved wife, Virginia, building a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. Together they delighted in traveling and spending their winters in Naples, Florida. Bob was also an enthusiastic sportsman-he enjoyed golf, handball, and racquetball-and was, by all accounts, a dedicated "yard bird," taking great pride in the care of his home and garden.

Bob lived 98 years with grace, purpose, and an enduring love for his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held at St. Joan of Arc Church at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, April 4, 2026. Following the service, the family will be departing for a private burial service at Calvary Cemetery in Erie, Pennsylvania.
