Robert Edward Halloran, 89, of East Lyme, Connecticut, passed away on February 19, 2026, following complications from COPD, which he faced with courage and resilience.
Born on October 8, 1936, in
Bay City, Michigan, Robert was the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Gerhardt) Halloran. He was raised in Pinconning, Michigan, where he attended St. Michael's Catholic School and later Pinconning Area High School, ultimately earning his GED. Robert lived a life defined by service, dedication, and a deep love for his family and his country.
Robert proudly served in the United States Navy, enlisting in 1953 and honorably serving until 1973. During his 20 year military career, he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served aboard multiple ships, including the USS Aeolus and the USS Marias (AO 57), during the Vietnam War. His service in the U.S. Navy was a lasting source of pride and helped shape the values he carried throughout his life.
Following his military service, Robert built a career as a welder with the Electric Boat division of General Dynamics, where he contributed to the construction of nuclear submarines until his retirement in 1993. In retirement, he enjoyed visiting the casinos, where his wit, lucky streaks, and memorable stories were well known, and he especially looked forward to meeting his close friends there for breakfast.
Robert was an avid NASCAR fan who enjoyed both watching and attending races. He cherished traveling and cruising with his wife, Dottie, and valued the camaraderie of attending U.S. Navy ship reunions for the vessels on which he served.
He also treasured return trips to his hometown of Pinconning, Michigan, where he delighted in visiting family and friends and savoring fresh Michigan perch, his sister in law Geraldine's homemade strawberry freezer jam, and Pinconning cheese. Above all, Robert most deeply cherished the time he spent with his family and friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy (McGrath) Halloran, with whom he shared 39 years of marriage.
He is survived by his brother and sister in law, Gerald and Geraldine Halloran of Standish, Michigan; his sister, Kathleen Halloran of Rose City, Michigan; his nieces, Nadine (Dan) Gill of Mesa, Arizona, and Stephanie (David) Nappier of Huffman, Texas; and his great nephews, Korbin and Ryder Nappier, and great niece, Skylar Nappier, all of Huffman, Texas.
Robert will be remembered for his strength, kindness, humor, and mentorship. His legacy of service and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday February 25, 2026 at 11:00 at the East Lyme Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy.
The family of Robert extends their heartfelt gratitude to Craig Bowers for his kindness, friendship, and unwavering support as a devoted friend and neighbor.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Fair winds and following seas.
