Robert "Bob" Hammar
May 5, 1932 – July 22, 2024
Born and raised in Tillamook, Oregon by Everett and Harriett Hammar, Bob served in the Navy during the Korean War and graduated from Bradley University in 1957. Soon after, he settled in Tacoma, Washington with his new bride, Mary (Luthy).
Bob was an entrepreneur and community builder – serving in leadership and volunteer roles in business groups, the local school district, church, and Rotary.
In retirement he enjoyed time with family and travel. He was active in the Lakewood Rotary Club and a long-time member of University Place Presbyterian Church until 2023 when he moved to Bainbridge Island.
He is survived by his wife Mary; children, Taryn (Ron), Paige (Steve), Brad (Aileen), and Darcy (Jon); grandchildren Daniel (Mary), Marya (Becca), Harriett, Mo (Leila), and Fiona (Azul); great grandson Alex; brother Les (Margrit); many nieces and nephews; beloved foreign exchange students; and others he thought of as his bonus children.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, August 25th at University Place Presbyterian Church, at 2 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear tropical prints or bright colors. If unable to attend, watch live at https://uppc.org/live. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to The Rotary Foundation https://my.rotary.org/en/rotary-foundation

My heartfelt condolences to the Hammar Family.

Bob will certainly be missed by friends, family and community. The Hammar Family left a legacy in Tacoma and the Uniform Industry and Bob will be remembered for his contributions to that legacy.

I have such fond memories of my time at Hammar's Uniforms, the friendship I developed with the Hammar Family, and the times later in our lives when we were able to get together occasionally for lunch. Bob and Mary were instrumental in my career by supporting my pursuit of a CPA license. I have always been so grateful for that.

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Bob was someone that I knew for literally all of my 61 years, starting out as a kid, growing up in what was known then as University Place United Presbyterian Church. He always ready with a joke, and his quick wit. On more than one occasion he coordinated our newspaper recycling to raise funds for our youth group. Later in life, after I moved to California, whenever I would return to Tacoma to visit, Bob would always make a point to meet me for lunch where he would keep me in stitches with his stories, and then of course he would always have something of value to add, be it a business anecdote or just some general advice, I welcomed it all, and I will miss him immensely.

Mary & family - My heart is saddened to hear of the loss of Bob. He will truly be missed. I first met Bob and you, Mary, 49 years ago! Connections throughout our lives, Hammer Uniform, Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, AWB and of course Rotary, always renewed the love I have for you two. What a great team you two made. You have enriched my life with your teamwork, love, community work and laughter. Bob will forever hold a special place in my heart. May the peace and love of our Lord bring you comfort during this time.

My sincerest condolences to Mary and the entire family . Around 2002, I first met Bob via a TahitiTalk blog on the Internet , where all questions re. Tahiti were discussed . A few years later , I invited him and Jacques , the caretaker of his house " Fare Hamara " on Mo'orea ( Tahiti's sister island ) for a paella dinner in my rented bungalow by the lagoon . We had lovely talks and much fun . We shared our love for Tahiti and Polynesia in general , compared each others vast collections of books about the subject . At one point , he commissioned me to paint him an oil painting of his beloved Opunohu Bay , where his house was located ,overlooking the beauty of Mo'orea . He was most pleased with the painting . We stayed in contact via Facebook until recently . May you rest in everlasting peace , Bob. Sincerely Uschi Ringleb , Mississauga, Canada ,

Condolences to Mary and family. Bob was my mentor and friend. I´d met him when I was a recent UWT graduate and started my first career with Boy Scouts of America. Bob gave me his belt when he was a Scout as I´d often wear my Scout uniform to Rotary. We shared many lunches at Rotary and sat on several committees together. He talked highly of his youth in Scouting, his love for his teacher wife and kids, and his love in his other home in Tahiti. When Jim and I married and had kids, he was always sharing good news through Jim´s mom as Mary was in choir at UPPC. When I left Scouting for a career as a Pharmaceutical Rep, Bob shared with me about his health and living with diabetes giving me a "patient´s perspective " of my "why" for educating health care providers. When I started a career in teaching, he was so happy as he valued educators and shared so many stories with me. Bob was supportive, happy, and was a beam of light. Prayers to Mary and kids as he loved you all so much and spoke so highly of you all!! Kindly, Carrie Crabbe
