Robert Hardgrove, 99, passed away on October 6th, 2024. He was the son of the late Ellis and Elsie Hardgrove and had eight siblings. Robert grew up in Dunellen and was a U.S Navy veteran serving in WWII and Korean War. Robert is survived by his brother John Hardgrove, his wife Ann Marie of Green Brook NJ. He was predeceased by his siblings Ellis, Harold, Melvin, Clifford, Robert, Virginia, and Barbara. His brother, Roy passed away just four days after Robert on October 10th, 2024.
In 2000, Robert moved back to his hometown of Dunellen to be closer Family.
After traveling the world during both wars, Robert moved to Clinton, IL. He worked for the Clinton Journal as a Linotype Operator until he retired. He also developed his passion to become a fine artist. At the age of 60, Robert took art classes at Illinois State University and studied with prominent art professors such as Harold Boyd, Harold Gregor, Ken Holder, and Ron Jackson. In 1992, Robert had his first major exhibition in Chicago followed by numerous art shows throughout Illinois. According to Robert, "I don't pay any attention to what's around me, I paint what's in my mind." Robert made numerous lifelong friends at ISU with his talent, charm, and humor, and they lovingly called him "Uncle Bob." Amazingly, he created artwork every day throughout the last 24 years.
Arrangements are in the care of Memorial Funeral Home and are private.
