Frank Orrico, of
Gillette, New Jersey, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on February 21, 2026, at the age of 101.
Born on October 24, 1924, in
South Plainfield, New Jersey, Frank was the eldest of three sons born to Sabbito (Sam) and Josephine Orrico, who emigrated from Italy in the early 1900s. Growing up on Pleasant Avenue in Fanwood, in a close-knit family, he earned the affectionate nickname "Friendly Frank Formerly of Fanwood," a tribute to his outgoing personality and genuine love of people.
Frank graduated from Scotch Plains Public High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army at just 18 years old. He entered active service on March 3, 1943, at Fort Dix and was deployed overseas as a Private First Class with the 12th Infantry Regiment. He served with courage in the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, participating in the Rhineland, Ardennes, Northern France, and Central Europe offensives during World War II. On January 21, 1945, during fierce combat in Luxembourg, Frank was wounded by heavy shrapnel fire. For his bravery and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, along with the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon and four bronze service stars. Despite his injuries, Frank returned to the front lines and continued to serve honorably until his discharge on October 19, 1945.
After the war, Frank embraced the opportunities afforded by the GI Bill, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Pace University. He began his career with Western Electric in the mailroom and steadily rose through the ranks to management. Over the years, he dedicated himself to Western Electric and later AT&T, building a respected and successful career until his retirement. Frank was also instrumental in establishing an American Legion post in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, and remained an active and proud member throughout his life.
Frank's greatest joy was his family. He met his beloved wife, Helen, at Western Electric, and they were married on May 4, 1958. They raised three children and were blessed with six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom were the pride and light of Frank's life. Frank and Helen created a home filled with warmth, tradition, and hospitality, hosting countless holidays and celebrations that remain cherished memories for family and friends.
In 1958, Frank built the family's first home in Plainfield, New Jersey, close to his parents and extended family. In 1972, they moved to Barnegat Light, New Jersey, where Frank commuted daily to Newark from Long Beach Island. In 1978, following a job transfer to Basking Ridge, the family settled in Meyersville, New Jersey, where Frank remained for the rest of his life.
An avid golfer, Frank's passion for the game was legendary. He participated in a traveling league that made annual trips to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, enjoying friendly competition and camaraderie. He and Helen also loved to travel, especially to Italy, where they explored their heritage and revisited towns Frank had defended during the war. He helped organize his high school reunions, including the memorable 65th reunion in 2007, which was featured in the Courier News.
A faithful parishioner of Christ the King Catholic church for nearly 45 years, Frank rarely missed Sunday 7:00 a.m. Mass. His deep and abiding faith was a guiding force throughout his life, sustaining him through war, work, family life, and the many joys and sorrows of a century well lived.
Even in his later years, Frank embodied vitality and gratitude. He continued to golf, drive, chop wood, garden, and spend time with friends and neighbors-always with the same joyful spirit that earned him his lifelong nickname. A proud patriot and devoted veteran, Frank loved the United States of America and exemplified the enduring strength, resilience, and character of the Greatest Generation.
Frank was pre-deceased in 2024 by his beloved wife of 65 years, Helen (nee Pinelli). He is survived by his loving children, Joseph Orrico, Gene Orrico, and Elene Galante and her husband Lawrence; his cherished grandchildren, Alison (Zach) Smith, Nicole (Mark) Jones, S. Joseph Orrico, Michael Orrico, Frank (Anjelik) Galante and James (Alexa Mennona) and great-grandchildren, Lyla Rae Smith and Francesco James Galante. Frank was also pre-deceased by his two beloved brothers, Sabbito (Sab) Orrico and his wife Lillian and Charles Orrico and his wife Janelle, whose memory, and the bond they had, remained a cherished part of Frank's life story. He is also survived by many loving relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
Frank will be forever remembered for his courage, generosity, humor, and unwavering devotion to his faith, his family and his country.
The visitation will be held at Paul Ippolito Berkeley Memorial, 646 Springfield Ave., Berkeley Hts., NJ on Sunday, March 1st, from 2-6 PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Christ the King Church, 16 Blue Mill Road, New Vernon, NJ on March 2nd at 10:30 AM.
