Robert F Hassett Sr.

Robert F. Hassett, 80, of Metuchen, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025 at his home in Metuchen surrounded by family.

Robert was born in Bayonne to William and Sarah Hassett who owned Hassett's Tavern for 69 years. He grew up in the apartment above the bar at 185 Broadway. Robert married his wife, Mary Sue, and moved to Metuchen in 1973 where he commuted daily into NYC working as a Fiduciary Trust Manager at Deutsche Bank (formerly Bankers Trust). Robert and Mary Sue were parishioners of St. Francis Cathedral for 52 years where their children were baptized, received first communion, and holy confirmation.

Over their 54 year adventure they traveled the US and the world starting with their honeymoon to Trinidad and Tobago which they revisited for their 25th wedding anniversary. Additional trips include Paraguay, Antigua, China, an RV trip out west, a river cruise down the Danube, train trip to Lake Louise and Glacier National Park, cross country road trip, New Orleans, Branson, Grand Canyon, Sedona, California, Disney World, Las Vegas, Florida Keys, Caribbean Cruises, and more.

Locally, they enjoyed vacationing down the shore, pizza Fridays, Plays in the Park, Papermill Playhouse, and attending their kids and grandkids sporting events including gymnastics, swimming, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, wrestling, and track.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Sue Hassett (Martingale); his children, Amy Hassett of Brooklyn NY, Robert Hassett Jr. and his wife Smarda of Metuchen, and Julie Zaneto and her husband Nick of Metuchen; his sister, Geraldine Wendell of East Brunswick; and his grandchildren, Nicholas, Taylor, Harrison, Alexander, and Jackson.

He is predeceased by his parents, William and Sarah Hassett; and siblings, William, Sarah, Kathleen, Marilyn, Margaret, and Michael.

The Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 from 3:00-7:00pm at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave, Metuchen.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday September 3, 2025 at 9:45am at the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:15am at St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Metuchen.
