Robert Hertzog

Robert Lewis Hertzog

May 24, 1935 – February 14, 2026

Bob was the eldest son of William Henry and Clara Lewis Hertzog. He was born in Easton, PA. Bob graduated from Springfield Township HS in OH, and then enlisted in the US Airforce. He was an airplane mechanic, an instructor for mechanics, and then a teacher in the instructor's school. That is where he discovered his passion for teaching. After serving our country for 20 years, he finished his BS and MS at North Texas University, followed by his PhD in Communication Research at the University of Iowa (all that in 7 years)! He taught college at Pella College in Iowa, the University of Maine, and Indiana University until he retired in 2000. For the next 16 years, he continued to teach part time at Miami University of Ohio. Teaching made him truly happy.

Bob dedicated himself to whatever pursuit he took up. He excelled at water skiing, bowling (a 300 game!), bridge, golf, and racquetball. He loved photography, travel, his grandchildren, and most of all his wife of 42 years, Bonnie. Bob was a brilliant man who revered education, clear, critical thinking and listening to others. He was quiet and compassionate.

Bob is survived by his wife, Bonnie, children Denise (Daren) and Robert Jr. (Agnes), step-son Matt, grandchildren Helena (Rob), Marisa (Marcus), Bryana, Natalie, Lianna and Wyatt, great granddaughters Maylee and Madelyn, siblings Fred, David and Sandie, nieces, and nephews.
