Founder, Entrepreneur, Visionary, Family Man
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert H. Hoover lovingly known as Bob whose life was defined by passion, ingenuity, and unwavering devotion. Bob passed away on July 15 2025 leaving behind a legacy rooted in integrity, vision, and the enduring strength of family.
Bob grew up in Hackettstown, New Jersey, and married Fern, beginning their life together in Stanhope. Once their children were grown, Bob and Fern relocated to Ocean County, New Jersey, while also maintaining a residence in St. Lucie, Florida-driven by Bob's deep love for the water.
While growing up in Hackettstown, Bob was a Future Farmer of America, but after the loss of his father, he took a different path and Bob began his working life on the DL&W Railroad, where dedication and long hours sparked an entrepreneurial spirit. While still working nights and weekends, he co-founded Robert H. Hoover and Sons, a construction company built with his wife Fern. Eventually, Bob left the railroad to focus full-time on building the business, laying the foundation for what would become Hoover Truck Centers-established alongside Fern and his son Robert. Shortly thereafter, they were joined by his son Douglas and daughter Wendy, marking the beginning of a true family enterprise. Bob's keen vision and strong moral compass guided by his Christian faith shaped the company's culture of honesty, excellence, and service. His influence remains deeply embedded in the way the company operates today.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife Fern and his sister Barbara Markovich. He is survived by his brother William Hoover; his children Wendy Schreiber and husband Bill, Robert Hoover and wife Maria, Cheryl Williams and husband Jim, and Douglas Hoover and wife Elizabeth; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren all of whom he cherished deeply. Bob's pride in his family was immeasurable; he found immense joy in sharing stories of their accomplishments, and his love for them was unmistakable in every word and smile.
Beyond his family and business endeavors, Bob was a man of many passions. He loved boating-whether powerboats or sailboats and spent countless cherished moments on the water. His commitment extended to community involvement, including active roles in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Stuart Sailfish Club.
Bob was also deeply involved in the broader industry and civic life. He served as past president of the New Jersey Motor Truck Construction Carriers Conference. A 33rd° Mason and member of Musconetcong Masonic Lodge #42, Bob was also a proud Shriner.
Bob Hoover lived a life of purpose and authenticity. His legacy will endure in the lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the company and family he so passionately nurtured. (Well done, good and faithful servant" – Matthew 25:23)
A memorial service will be held on Saturday August 9, 2025 at 11:00 am at the first Presbyterian church in Hackettstown. Burial will follow the service at Union Cemetery in Hackettstown.
