COLUMBIANA - With a life marked by devotion to his family, service to his country, and a deep-rooted sense of community, Robert "Bob" Hughes, age 86, of Columbiana, passed away peacefully early Friday evening, October 11, 2024.
Bob was born in East Liverpool, on July 29, 1938, to the late Leo and Rosella (Campbell) Hughes, Bob's early life in the Buckeye State laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work, love, and laughter.
His journey through life was one of unwavering commitment and joy. He shared over six decades of marriage with his beloved wife, Lanila Hughes, after they wed on December 6, 1961. Their partnership was blessed with four wonderful children: sons, Robert W. and Doug Hughes, and daughters, Lori Guy and Shelly Pennybaker. The family grew to include eight cherished grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense happiness and pride to Bob's life.
A proud United States Navy veteran, Bob's service to his country was a testament to his character and patriotism. After serving his nation, he continued to contribute to his community through his work as a truck driver with B.O.C. Gases. His more than 30 years of dedicated service until his retirement in 2003 were marked by the same integrity and commitment that defined his military service.
Bob's involvement with the American Legion and the Coon Hunter's Club reflected his love for camaraderie and his passion for the outdoors. He was a familiar face at meetings and events, always ready with a story or a helping hand. His friends and fellow members will remember him for his ready smile, his infectious laugh, and the warmth he brought to every gathering. Bob had an wonderful sense of humor, he was always ready with a joke or had a funny story to tell.
Preceded in death by his sister, Margaret J. "Peg" Wellington, and brother, Leo Keith Hughes, Bob leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. He was the kind of man who built a life not just for himself but for all those he held dear. His family will remember him as a guiding light - a man who, by example, showed what it means to live a life full of purpose, generosity, and unwavering love.
As we mourn the loss of Bob Hughes, we also celebrate his remarkable life. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him, and his memory will be treasured forever. Bob's life story is a testament to the beauty that can be found in a life well-lived, one filled with family, service, and community.
Rest in peace, dear Bob; your legacy will continue to inspire and guide us for generations to come. Following Bob's wishes there are no calling hours or services planned at this time.
