Colonel (Ret) Robert D. Jones, 91, passed away at his home in Fort Washington MD on Aug 11, 2023. He suffered a severe stroke in 2013. His loving wife of 71 years, Caroline (Painter) Jones, passed away on Dec 1 2022 at age 90.
Robert (Bob) is survived by his four children Marilynn Kettner (Steven) of Edmond OK, Richard Jones (Lorraine) of Yorktown VA, Lori George (Stephen) of Lovettsville VA, and Rodney Jones of Fort Washington MD. Robert is also survived by his sister, Linda Conner of Saint Louis MI and his brother Paul Jones of Colorado. He was born on Jan 15, 1932 to Arthur and Nellie (Bloss) Jones in Stanton MI. Caroline was born on June 4, 1932 to Clarence and Edna Painter in Coe Township MI.
Bob enlisted in the US Marine Corp in 1950 shortly after graduating high school in Crystal MI. Bob served 27 years in the USMC rising to the rank of Colonel, before retiring in 1978. He commanded field artillery battalions in VietNam during the war and received a "Bronze Star Medal w/ Combat V" for heroism during combat. He was "Commander 2nd Battalion10th Marines", Camp Pendleton CA prior to the war and later served as a "Senior Field Artillery Instructor" at Fort Sill OK and as "Chief of Amphibious Operations", Headquarters US Marine Corp, Washington DC.
Falling in love as high school sweethearts, Bob and Carol, married on June 16, 1951 in Fredericksburg VA while Bob was stationed at Quantico Marine Base VA and it was there that 15 months later their first child was born. Bob always loved Quantico and he and Carol often visited there and the neighboring city of Fredericksburg where their life together began.
Their first 27 years of marriage as a USMC family included the birth of four children, over a dozen full household relocations and living in 8 different states from California to Rhode Island. Carol was a devoted, loving wife and mother throughout the years and fully supported Bob's military career in any way she could. She "held down the fort" during long absences, made a home of every house they lived in, raised four kids, and Man, could she doll it up for the Marine Corp Ball or cocktails at the officer's club!
After the Marine Corp they relocated one final time to their home in Fort Washington MD. Bob wanted to be close to his career as Executive Comptroller for Metropolitan Business Machines and they both wanted a house and property that would accommodate visitors. Bob and Carol loved life best when they were home and surrounded by family. Their home was a welcoming gathering place for their children and their families where many happy memories were made during the summer months and holidays.
They are also survived by their grandchildren, Eric Jones, Ashley Garcia, Lindsey Coleman, Nia Leahy and Katie George and six great grandchildren, Grace Garcia, Amalia Coleman, Madeleine Garcia, Fred Coleman, Logan Leahy, and Aurora Coleman.
There will be a visitation held at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road in Woodbridge VA on August 22, 2023 from 12:30 to 1:30 where services will be held. Burial will follow after the service at Quantico National Cemetery at 2:00.

Remembering many great memories of your smile, charisma and laughter over the years at family gatherings and those many times over the years you stayed with us or the trips we made East. You were alway a light in the room. RIP my fellow "Cowboys" loving uncle.
