Robert Jerold Mayes

Robert Jerold Mayes, age 90, of Elgin, IL, passed away on December 7, 2025. He was born June 19, 1935 in Plainfield, IN to his loving parents, James and Hazel (née Turbyville) Mayes.

Robert graduated from Elgin High School, Class of 1956, and went on to build a career as a union plumber at the Elgin State Hospital, where he worked with integrity and skill for many years.

In 1962, Robert married the love of his life, Janet (née Fritz) Mayes. Their marriage was a true partnership, lasting 63 years until Janet's passing in October, 2025. Together, they raised a family grounded in strong values and unconditional love.

Robert was a reserved man, but his actions spoke volumes. He was fiercely protective of his loved ones and was known for his generous, caring nature. He loved spending time outdoors-whether hunting deer and pheasants, or fishing on quiet mornings. He had a soft spot for home baked goods and cherished the comfort of familiar routines and family traditions. Tending to his yard and garden brought him peace and joy-a quiet labor of love that reflected his steady and grounded spirit.

Above all, Robert loved his family. He was a steady presence, a protector, and a source of quiet comfort and support. His love was evident in the simple, everyday moments that will now live on in the hearts of those who knew him best.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Mayes; sons, John Robert Mayes and Kenneth Scott Mayes; and grandson, Jacob Allen Mayes. He is survived by his grandchildren, Julianne Mayes and Sarabeth Mayes; and great-grandson, Stanley Palomino.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm, Saturday, December 20, 2025 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 357 Division Street, Elgin, IL 60120. Pastor Andrea Delaney will be officiating.

Interment will be private.
