Loyalty. Service. Dedication. A life well-lived for 96 years. Robert McGarry died peacefully surrounded by his family on November 4, 2023 at his daughter’s home in Woodlyn. He was born on September 25, 1927 to Marie (Leinhauser) and James in Philadelphia, PA. He grew up in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia and attended Roman Catholic High School. He served in the US Army from 1946 to 1952 and fought during World War II.
Robert met his future wife, Elizabeth who pre-deceased him, at his brother's wedding and they were married for 59 years. He was a resident of the Swarthmorewood section of Ridley Township for 67 years. Together, they raised two children.
Robert had a long career as a sprinkler fitter for 35 years, even serving as President of Local Union 692 from 1969 to 1990. He was an active member of the Herbert W. Best VFW Post 928. Robert was Commander for one year at the post.
Robert enjoyed the Phillies and being with his large family. He loved attending parties and watching games on the deck. He was quick-witted and had a great sense of humor. He was known as "Pop" and gave the best fatherly advice to anyone who asked him for guidance. A true family man--his kindness and wisdom will be missed.
He is survived by his son Robert G. (Patricia) McGarry and daughter Susan E. Almony (Vincent) and his grandchildren: Kathleen, Jackelyn, Rebecca, Alexandra, Robert, and Mare. Great-grandchildren: Owen, Nolan, Rhys, Maeve, Leo, and Kaelyn and sister Doris (John) Arnoldy.
