George Thomas McGarry passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his partner of 17 years, Marylou Trojano. He was previously married for 25 years to Canice McGarry, with whom he raised six children.

He is survived by his children: Michael, Julie, Maureen, Paula (James Wooster), Brian (Lorraine McDonough), and Lizabeth (Jeff Mansfield). He was godfather to his niece, Deborah Fox, and great-uncle to Heather Brudz. He leaves behind ten grandchildren: Sarah (Jacob Sanders), Matthew, Griffin, Ben, Emily, Nora, Anna, Ellie, Cole, and Charlie, and two great grandchildren: Sloane and Graham. He was also a dear friend to Alice Burke and Tommy Howard of Charlestown, MA.

Raised in an Irish Catholic family, George was the youngest son of Helen and Stephen McGarry and brother to the late Helene, Joseph and Joan. He graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1952; served four years in the United States Navy from 1952 ~ 1956; and graduated from Stonehill College in 1960.

George taught English and Social Studies at Brockton High School for 17 years, creating and teaching a course called "The City". He also taught for several years at other high schools in MA. George later earned a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) from Boston University, and taught graduate courses in Boston, Germany and Italy for the University.

George was Chairman of the Easton Democratic Town Committee, Chairman of the Easton Housing Authority, and dedicated many years of public service to the community in Easton.

George loved coaching basketball, discussing politics, watching PBS news, listening to and singing folk music, and traveling to China. An avid reader, George had a love for language and words. In the long tradition of great Irish storytellers and poets, he was fond of reciting poetry and Irish sayings, telling

colorful stories filled with humor, and dispensing advice to those he loved.He found peace walking at Langwater in Easton and in taking daily walks til age 91 in the Charlestown Navy Yard.

His family will hold a Mass at St. Mary's Church in Charlestown and a private celebration of life in the spring of 2026 to honor George.
