A Life Well Lived
Bob was born February 19, 1938, in Dumas, Texas, and grew up in McComb, Mississippi. He married Lucy Carolyn Cain on August 1, 1958, and graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. He was a proud member of The Famous Maroon Band while he was a student at MSU. He played French Horn and was the Band President his Senior year.
Early in his career, he worked in Huntsville, Alabama at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center (formerly NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center) and The Alabama State Docks in Mobile, AL. While in Huntsville, he was part of the design team for the Saturn V Transport. It still hangs in the Space and Rocket Center, and he could direct you to the exact part he helped design.
He loved the structural design element of civil engineering and would point out roads or bridges he had worked on during family road trips. He later moved into management and spent the height of his career as Plant Manager and Vice President of Manufacturing at Masland Carpets in Atmore, Alabama.
A Man of Faith, Family, and Humor
Bob was a terrific "girl dad" to Chris Smith (Clyde), Patti Dew, and Lori Dunn (Jimmy). His sense of humor was of epic proportions, and each of the girls got their fair share.
He loved fishing, hunting, golfing, tennis, singing, Mississippi State football, playing the French horn (often while waiting on Lucy and the girls to finish dressing for church), guns and gun shows, his dogs, reading (mostly, The Bible and westerns), and watching John Wayne movies.
He loved singing so much that he often sang hymns in his sleep.
Cherished Family and Friends
He cherished being PawPaw Big Bob to his grandchildren: Clayton Dew, Erin Brand (Daniel), Christine Dunn, Deacon Smith (Jackie), Rob Dunn, Anna Smith, Anthony Dunn, Maggie Beth Skinner (Jake), and Adrien Dunn.
He was thrilled to become a great-PawPaw to Addi, Luci, Waylon, Cedar, and Walker.
He was also affectionately known as PawPaw to chosen family-bonus daughter, Karen Goza, bonus son, Greg Dew, and bonus grands, Marcus Paulson and Kayla Shelton.
He and Lucy were blessed to be lifelong friends with Kay Grant (Jack). If you were loved by Bob, he made certain you knew it.
A Faithful Servant
Bob loved all his friends and family with all his heart, but he loved Jesus most of all.
He served Him by teaching Sunday School for most of his adult life (with many different age groups through the years), singing in the choir until he could no longer make it to the choir loft, and leading his "study course" at a nearby assisted living facility.
Most of all, he served by living a life full of faith and passing that faith not only to his three girls, but also to the many others he loved and spiritually mentored.
A Celebration of Life Service
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, November 21, 2025,, at 2:00 p.m. at Church on Bayshore, 622 Bayshore Drive, Niceville, Florida.
