Mr. Doyce McGuffee was born on October 20, 1937 and passed from this life on March 29, 2025, at the age of 87. He grew up on the Ouachita River in Sandy Bayou Community in Caldwell Parish. During his school years, he played basketball, football, and ran track. When he graduated from Columbia High School, Doyce went to play football at Northwestern State College until an injury sideline him. He also went to the Northeast LA State College. Doyce then went on to join the U.S. Army Reserves and became a fireman for the West Monroe Fire Department. During his years of saving many people's lives and property, Doyce became the Asst Fire Chief before moving on to the Caney Lake Volunteer Fire Dept. Along with that calling he was a deacon at Caney Lake Baptist Church and with Linda the owner of West Monroe Marble. In later years, he would love to hunt, fish, and sing "In the Garden" and a list of short four line songs. After my father passed we moved into a house next door to Doyle, I was a junior at wmhs. Many times he wood take to his old home place in Columbia were we ran trot lines at night. As we were leaving one Sunday afternoon we turned off hwy. 4 onto 165 he sped up & pulled into a motel with a lot of smoke come out of the roof. He jump out & started knocking on doors & when fire dept. got there he helped them put out the fire. He & his wife were a big help to my mom. Hated to see him struggle in his later years with Alzheimer´s.
