Honoring the life of Robert Lewis Mergens, Sr., of McDonough who was welcomed into the presence of the Lord Jesus on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Born on the 7th day of November 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late John Henry Mergens and Ethel Louise (Glover) Mergens. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters; Margaret Wix, Jacqueline Land and Helen Sweeney, and his wife, of 66 years, Joyce Ann (Avera) Mergens.
He is survived by his brother, Sidney John Mergens of Griffin, GA.; son, Robert Lewis Mergens, Jr. (Angelia); daughters, Leesa Eason, Linda Burns (Rich), and Laura Sullivan (Cliff); grandchildren, Joy Kuhrt, Melissa Oden (Steven), Caleb Mergens, Jordan Hamlet (Cody), Jarrod Cochran (Stephanie), Clay Cochran (Morgan), and Ryan Cochran (Jessie Reece Cochran); great-grandchildren, Sarah Kuhrt, Ryleigh and Aailyah Fonseca, Liam Oden, Owen Cochran, Willow Cochran, Paden Reece, and Tristan Reece (Kiersten); and great-great-grandchild, Remington Reece.
Robert, fondly known as "Bob, "Dad" and "Pop", was a native Georgian, working and going to school in Atlanta. Joining the Navy at the age of 17, he served in WWII on the USS Hornet CV12 and the Sitkoh Bay CV3 carriers as a Seaman First Class, Aviation Mechanic. Awarded the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Medal. He returned home after the war and finished high school with his brother, Sid.
He worked at J.B. Acquire Firm Life Ins. Company as a draftsman apprentice for blueprints, then at Commercial Credit, checking delinquent accounts; all before working for the City of Atlanta Fire Department where he retired as a Lieutenant after 25 years of service. He also worked part-time at Sears Robuck in Atlanta where he retired after 30 years of service. He was a carpenter, proficient in electrical work and wielding, taught by his brother, Sid.
His life was an example of integrity, honesty, dedication, modestly living within your means, striving to do your best, and generosity and fierce love of family and Jesus Christ. A life well lived. A blessing to many. A hero, our "Dad", "Pop", "Bob".

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in the East Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors with Pastor Rick Long and Chaplain Lamont Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to The Henry County Fire Department's "Burn Boots" or to Southern Grace Hospice.
