Robert Dean Mitchell

Funeral services for Mr. Robert Dean Mitchell will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026, in the Chapel of Rush Funeral Home, Pine Prairie. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Ferguson Cemetery, Bayou Chicot, under the direction of Rush Funeral Home, Oakdale.

Mr. Mitchell, 71, of Saint Landry, Louisiana, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2026, surrounded by family at Prairie Manor Nursing Home in Pine Prairie, Louisiana.

Robert was born to Oriah Dean "O.D." Mitchell and Violet Ion Clopton Mitchell of Bayou Chicot, on December 8, 1954, in Ville Platte, Louisiana. He began a career in the oilfield at a young age, working his way up through positions as a motorman and derrickhand on the rig over the years. Following a medical diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), he stepped away from his career in the oilfield to focus on his recovery, family, and hobbies. In addition to his deep love for his family, Robert enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, frogging, horseback riding, and raising farm animals. He was also an avid breeder of American Pit Bull Terriers and raised many game roosters. Robert will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for walking barefoot in the woods on "Mitchell Hill," dressed in his blue jean cut-off shorts and black T-shirt with a pocket, wearing his ponytail, while tending to his animals.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oriah "O.D." Mitchell and Violet Ion Clopton Mitchell; and one sister, Violet Marie "Sissy" Mitchell.

Those left to mourn his loss and cherish his memory include his wife of forty-eight years, Sherry Ardoin Mitchell of Saint Landry; four children, Rebecca Mitchell Berzas and husband, Anthony, of Ville Platte, April Mitchell Fontenot of Pine Prairie, Joshua Dean Mitchell of Saint Landry, and Robert Chase Mitchell of Saint Landry; and six grandchildren, Raegan Mitchell, Briana Berzas, Ryan Mitchell, Jordan Fontenot, Hunter Mitchell, and Garrett Mitchell.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are: Chase Mitchell, Anthony Berzas, Raymond Granger III, Christian Doucet, Nicholus Mitchell, Josh Fontenot, Herbert Fontenot, and Brady Bellard.
